Goal

Algebra is the gateway to higher levels of math and science. By using and implementing Hands-On Equations lessons and manipulatives students will have a fun and easy way to learn algebra. Students will learn to solve advance equations. They will be able to solve conceptually.

What will be done with my students

Students need to have a successful experience with algebra. With Hands-On Equations each student will work with their own manipulatives and models to solve abstract equations. They will learn to "balance" an equation and substitute or solve for "x" or the unknown. By working with visuals and models students will instantly understand the abstract concept. Students will learn how to physically and pictorially represent algebraic equations.
Students will also learn how to solve verbal problems which are essential for success in algebra.

Benefits to my students

The term "algebra" often strikes fear into the hearts of students. With this program students will learn to turn abstract equations into something concrete and familiar to them by using manipulatives. Manipulatives are essential tools for learning mathematics. Students using manipulatives to learn algebra will help them make sense of abstract ideas, provide them ways to test and verify ideas, and make learning more engaging.

Describe the Students

The make-up of the 93 gifted students at Bauder Elementary is mostly middle income families. This population is 88% Caucasian, 6% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 2% Multi-racial.
Our gifted students have a desire to learn. They need to be challenged in their academics with advanced curriculum.

Budget Narrative
