The goal is to provide our students with much needed proprioceptive input to allow for calming so they can attend to a task when engaged in financial literacy instruction. The proprioceptive sensory input assists with self-regulation to allow a student to remain at his desk and increase his organization and attention during activities that require significant sitting and listening which is needed for financial literacy instruction.

Goal

The goal is to provide our students with much needed proprioceptive input to allow for calming so they can attend to a task when engaged in financial literacy instruction. The proprioceptive sensory input assists with self-regulation to allow a student to remain at his desk and increase his organization and attention during activities that require significant sitting and listening which is needed for financial literacy instruction.

What will be done with my students

The students will crawl thru the resistance tunnel then get into the hot dog to assist with developing body awareness and motor planning. These provide the student with tactile and proprioceptive input to assist with remaining at their desks for daily financial literacy instruction. The spiral pad and the maze enhance the students eye/hand coordination and offers visual and tactile sensory input. The remaining sensory items will be utilized on an individual basis to address specific needs of each student. The hand fidgets will keep the hands busy, increasing organization and attention, especially during activities requiring larger amounts of sitting and listening, such as financial literacy lessons. The plush pulsating frog provides vibratory input. The dolphin wrap and the miracle belt can be worn by students who require additional proprioceptive input during classroom instruction for financial literacy. The students can earn play money by listening and following directions. The value of money and how it can be used in the classroom is reinforced throughout the school curriculum.

Benefits to my students

Research has suggested that there is an increase in attention to task and desk work after engagement in proprioceptive sensory activities. The goal is to incorporate proprioceptive sensory activities into the daily routine of the class to increase the students ability to attend to daily financial literacy activities.

Describe the Students

Our students are served within a special education center school. All of our students have an intellectual disability. Our students have sensory integration disorders, physical disabilities, speech and language impairments, and fine/gross motor deficits. Our students are working on functional academic skills within a life skills curriculum in order to obtain more independent living skills. Financial literacy is an imperative skill for our students to acquire for them to live more independent lives in the community.
Our students have significant sensory integration deficits that need to be addressed prior to learning opportunities in order for them to receive the greatest benefit from the lesson.
