Goal

To allow Berkshire English Learners (EL)students to focus on key concepts, develop enriched vocabulary, learn the structures of the English language, and participate in content-based conversations. Having the access to complex texts, academic vocabulary, purposeful collaboration and opportunities to develop strong English writing skills is needed as a reading resource in order to provide students a stronger path to Bi-literacy, prepare them for the rigorous state test and ultimately, reach a higher graduation rate levels in our school district. 

What will be done with my students

Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will be using the Advance/Adelante program during their daily 90 minutes reading block for the next 5 years. Teachers will use assessments and interventions provided by this program to keep track of student's needs and follow the curriculum benchmarks stated by our School District. They will use this data to differentiate their instruction during their small group in order to achieve students learning goals. 

Benefits to my students

Berkshire is a Tittle One, Dual Language School. Research all points to having a parallel program in English and Spanish ensuring students are mastering skills in two language and transferring learning from one language to another. By having Advance in the English program and Adelante in the Spanish program, we will be able to provide our students a stronger path to Biliteracy. In addition, this program offers the Spanish resources that are authentic and connected to all the resources so students are constantly reinforcing skills. It also has a whole group, small group, independent reading, phonics, Spanish language development support, intervention and assessment. In order to have a successful Dual Language program, it is necessary to have resources that are parallel and expose students to engaging, complex text and prepare them for the rigorous state test and beyond. This program is K-5th grade. We will be implementing it in grades K-2nd grade in Dual Language program. However, in order to continue implementing Florida Standards, scaffolding and hitting the breadth and depth of the standards, we want to implement this in grades 3,4, and 5 so all our students have the benefit of this parallel program. 

Budget Narrative

Berkshire 3rd, 4th or 5th grade students do not receive any founding from the school district to buy this reading program. We are asking for $91,000 grant. We will spend $33,242 for our 3rd grade students, $29,050 for our 4th grade classes and $ 29,050 for our 5th grade student classrooms.
