Goal

Crosspointe is a STEM school and we want to incorporate STEM into our daily routine. We have come up with an innovating idea to have robots as "Class pets". The goal of this project is to develop an interest and excitement in our students for robotics and in the technical skills they will need one day to pursue a STEM career path.  

 

What will be done with my students

Many classrooms have class pets (hermit crabs, fish, bearded dragons) but no other class or school for that matter has had class robots! Students will have full control over their pet. They will name their robot to make it more personal to their classroom. Their pet will follow the class everywhere throughout the school day. The class robot will travel to fine arts, lunch and transition with the class wherever they go just as if it was another student in the class. Students will be taught how to feed (charge) the robots. They will learn how to program them to do class tasks and they will learn how to operate the robot.
 

 

Benefits to my students

We believe this project will help take our STEM initiative to a new level. Students will be learning how to code and program all while having fun. Teachers can
choose a weekly "handler" for the robot. By doing this, we can also incorporate our Social Emotional Learning program. Students will need to cooperatively work together to trouble shoot issues all while showing empathy to the robot. Our hope is that the students will bond as a class and will bond with the robot on an emotional level.
We believe that this project will also be beneficial for our AVID program. With using daily technology, such as the robot, our students will be able to identify with careers in the field when they are discussed. We also believe that their individual confidence will be increased from the consistent exposure to technology. Students will be expanding their knowledge that will open up future career opportunities.
The purpose of this project is for students to build on the following skills: critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving, coding, programming and building their self confidence in robotics. The goal of this project is to develop an interest and excitement in our students for robotics and in the technical skills they will need one day to pursue a STEM career path.
These innovative class pets will incorporate ALL our school programs and initiatives in a cohesive form. STEM, AVID and SEL will be taught all while the students have a great time!
