Research has shown virtual reality (VR) as a cutting edge technology that holds incredible promise within education. We all know students, and especially students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), are drawn to technology, so why not use it to engage, inspire and teach them all the academic, functional, socio-emotional and life skills they need to succeed in life? Our goal is to raise enough money to buy the necessary materials to introduce this amazing elective, using VR, to students with disabilities, in order to learn all the necessary skills to live a happy and functional life. Support of this program will not only benefit this amazing young group of people and help them receive the necessary interventions they require to grow and learn, but it will also benefit the community as a whole.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students who chose this elective will have the opportunity to learn the Unique Skills: Curriculum and Learning through the use of virtual reality (VR). With the help of ClassVR, an internationally renown curriculum, incorporating immersive virtual reality, these students will not only be transported into space, the human body, and historical settings, but will also receive assistance with their socio-communication, functional, behavioral, motor and academic skills. VR creates a safe space for these students with disabilities within which to learn these skills, which can later be generalized across settings and into the real world. The elective is yearlong and includes academic, socio-communication, behavioral, functional, and life skills, along with assistance with IEP goals that will benefit and impact these students and their families for life.

Benefits to my students

With this elective we hope to increase student engagement and learning by not only transporting them through immersive VR into exciting safe spaces where they can practice their academic, socio-communication, motor, functional, and life skills, but we also hope to later have them generalize these skills across multiple settings and finally into the real world. VR also allows for fun and motivational repetitive teaching that can be one on one, or performed within groups. This VR elective will definitely benefit our students with ASD by providing an amazing opportunity to learn and grow with the Avatars while touring the universe and visiting exciting places through the magic of VR. Through the use of VR, these students will experience realities they might never have been able to, and practice skills such as job interviews, safely crossing the street, how to deal with bullies, and other safety skills that would be too dangerous to practice within the real world. Through role-play within VR, the students will learn these valuable skills within a very attractive high technology world of virtual reality. Best of all, they will have the ability to enjoy the experiences with their peers, who will also be able to join the learning platform, creating for safe socializing.

Budget Narrative

Even though research has supported its use, it is such a new and cutting edge approach to teaching that there is no real established funding for it yet. We would really appreciate your support in creating this unique program for students with disabilities that will most definitely impact the quality of their lives
