Wynnebrook started a music theater club for our 4th and 5th grade students this year. The student interest was incredible and we have over 70 cast and crew involved in this years musical production of The Lion King Jr.
Our cast started rehearsing in September and our production will be in March. Rehearsals have recently been moved into our school "Cafetorium." It is a nice space but we quickly realized that, no matter how loud our students said their lines, they could not be heard throughout the performance area. What a shame it would be for them to have done all of this work and not be heard.
Our goal is to raise $3247.91 to purchase 8 wireless headset microphones with receivers, transmitters, XLR cords and a rack to safely store and protect these items.

What will be done with my students

Music Theater has and will continue to provide an astonishing educational opportunity for our students. Not only will they get a chance to perform on the stage, but they will also experience many cross-curricular connections that musical theatre provides. We are using the program to help students learn to be better readers and writers. They are learning to read a script. They are developing their character’s personalities by acting which is also helping many of them with reading comprehension. They are studying the plot and learning about sequence of events as they analyze and perform the scenes. What makes this all so wonderful is that it is happening with such a natural progression that the students are hardly aware of all the learning that's going on.
This project has our cast working daily on creating a quality presentation. They work collaboratively, feel a true sense of accomplishment and pride and, they will want to do it again and again. It is heartwarming to see how the cast works together. They offer to help each other study and memorize lines, they cheer each other on when a scene or dance comes together; they even come to my room asking when they can have more rehearsals. This excitement for learning is why we need to make sure they are heard.
An added benefit with this project is that the purchase of microphones will not only benefit this years musical, but also musicals for years to come. A one time investment will touch the lives of all of the students at Wynnebrook now and in the future.

Benefits to my students

Our project is deserving of a grant because Wynnebrook is one of the poorest and oldest yet, highest performing schools in Palm Beach County. Our students have consistently performed as an “A” school for 15 years and counting. They deserve the chance to be rewarded for their diligence in the classroom by experiencing some of the best and most enjoyable time they can in the arts.
Wynnebrook's current enrollment is over 900 students. This project will positively impact all of them either as cast members who are performing or as the students, teachers and family members in the audience who get to HEAR a wonderful performance.
While our school community might not have the ability to fully fund a project of this size, we know we have friends like you who can help us. Funding this project would be a true blessing. Please help us turn "Can you hear me now?" into "I can hear you loud and clear."
