Goal

To bring literature home to families on the weekend. Giving students and their family’s some quality time while encouraging them to become closer through reading and activities. Finally, while reading at home with the involvement of parents students will develop a lifelong love of reading.

What will be done with my students

Students will be able to check out (with parent’s permission) a literacy bag for the weekend. Each bag will consist of three to five books which will be themed to go along with common core standards for first grade as well as the characters traits promoted by our school.

The books in each bag will be leveled so one is easy enough for the student to read independently followed by a more challenging book the student might need some help with. Some of the books will need to be read by the parent to the students to encourage family reading. There will also be a fun activity, game, or puzzle to go along with each theme of stories. This activity will give families time to read and play together.

Benefits to my students

With the economy the way it is, many families do not have the extra money to spend on children’s literature. The number of students on free and reduced lunch went up nearly10% this year alone. Many parents are working two jobs and the amount of time they spend with their children is limited. This program would bring quality literature and activities home with students so parents can help guide their learning. This weekend activity will provide a positive way to read and spend some quality time together as a family.

There will also be a notebook in these bags for both students and parents to journal in. There will be some general questions asked such as “what is one thing you learned from this bag?” and “which is your favorite book?” With this practice students are learning to respond to reading which is a part of the common core standards. This is also a fun way to get students writing at home.

This program will help reinforce concepts taught in the classroom, in addition to promoting critical thinking. Reading at home on the weekends will also have a positive effect on our reading program at school.

Budget Narrative

I plan to make 30 themed literacy bags to be shared among the first grade team. We will rotate the bags through all the classrooms. With this plan during the school year we will be able to reach all of our 98 students. With you generous donation will help students experience the joy of reading at home with their families, this program will encourage them to become lifelong readers, and will help them to be successful readers at school - and in life. Thank you.
