Goal

Students will increase their reading fluency, intonation, and expression through the use of dramatic role play utilizing the reader's theaters books in the ELA series and additional reader's theaters that the academic coach has. Students will be read, reread, and act out dramatizations of popular stories handed down from generation to generation.

What will be done with my students

In grades 4 and 5, as an extension of a previous futures grant, we have reader's theater books in each classroom. Wearing costumes allows the students to truly feel as the character in each story. This was a BIG hit for our students last year, however, we simply did not have enough costumes for the students so we would love to increase this for this school year. Students will work collaboratively in literature circles to make reading more fun and interactive. The teacher will meet with groups during small reading group time to go over creative ways to present a story to an audience. Students will read, rehearse, and present their story to their classmates. Afterwards, students will summarize the story, identify the plot of the story, and discuss how the character's actions help us understand their perspectives and views on things. Students will dress in costumes to take on the role of the characters.

Benchmarks covered through this grant are as follows:
ELA.4.R.1.1: Explain how setting, events, conflict, and character development contribute to the
plot in a literary text
ELA.4.R.1.3: Identify the narrator’s point of view and explain the difference between a
narrator’s point of view and character perspective in a literary text
ELA.4.F.1.4: Read grade-level texts with accuracy, automaticity, and appropriate prosody or
expression.
ELA.4.R.3.2: Summarize a text to enhance comprehension.
a. Include plot and theme for a literary text
ELA.4.C.2.1: Present information orally, in a logical sequence, using nonverbal cues, appropriate
volume, and clear pronunciation
ELA.5.R.1.1: Analyze how setting, events, conflict, and characterization contribute to the plot in
a literary text
ELA.5.R.1.3: Describe how an author develops a character’s perspective in a literary text
ELA.5.R.3.2: Summarize a text to enhance comprehension.
a. Include plot and theme for a literary text
ELA.5.C.2.1: Present information orally, in a logical sequence, using nonverbal cues,

Benefits to my students

Students in grades 4 and 5 will practice their fluency and will improve by repeated readings and reciprocal teaching with their peers through collaboration.

Students will participate in a fun activity that has tons of learning potential through collaboration.

Students will learn to be presenters, active listeners, and an audience by being in role playing scenarios and watching the presentations of others. The teacher will facilitate the learning thereby giving students the ability to lead.

Students will review how to create a summary, how to identify the central idea and supporting details of a story, as well as how to identify the character's point of view and perspective of a story based on their words and actions in the story through readers reflection activities.
