Goal

The school garden is growing! This year to celebrate our fifth year. We are building a pollinator garden. The goal is to build a native pollinator/sensory garden.

What will be done with my students

Students will be discovering many of the science big ideas, while the major focus of this product is the interdependency of plants and animals. Students will design pollinator garden space utilizing tires as containers. Students with assistance will clear the space and cover the area with weed barriers. Students will mix the soil and manure to add to containers. The students will plant various native Florida wildflowers and other appropriate pollinators. They will maintain the garden and provide routine care. They will observe and record the plants growth in the pollinator garden throughout the school year. Students will participate in discussions of plant structures, plant life cycles, and interdependency of nature while tending to the garden. The benchmarks targeted in the activities and discussions of the project are listed below.
Life Science:
SC.3. L.14.1- Describe structures in plants and their roles in food production, support, water and nutrient transport, and reproduction.
SC.2. L.16.1- Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies.
Nature of Science:
SC.2. N.1.1- Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free exploration and systematic observations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations.
• raises questions about the natural world.
• investigates questions in teams through free exploration and systematic observations.
• generates appropriate explanations based on those explorations

Benefits to my students

This funding will support a comprehensive program. Students will be able to get a hands-on project-based experience. The benchmarks discussed during our club meetings will directly supplement learning that is happening in all classrooms. Students will be able to engage in the classroom using knowledge gained through their own experiences. The garden is also used by students throughout the day as a sensory space. These students will benefit from being able to appreciate the garden when taking necessary breaks from class. This added space will provide additional colors, textures, and smells to support students who benefit from the stimulation.

Budget Narrative

: We will be purchasing native flower seedlings and seeds to grow throughout the year. The ground needs to be covered to block weeds in containers. We need soil, manure, and fertilizer to maintain flower growth. The hose sprayer will be used to water the pollinator garden throughout the year. We need a battery powered weed eater for adult use to keep the garden free from weeds and sandspurs. . We will be purchasing additional handheld weed pullers for areas that can be maintained by students. The gloves are needed for student use as well.
