Goal

Fluent readers will gain confidence and improve fluency from their independent reading practice. Emerging and early readers will increase time spent choosing reading as an independent activity. The overall school culture will be positively impacted as students of all ages help grow a school culture where reading is a personal activity of choice.

What will be done with my students

Students in the intermediate grades will partner with students from the primary grades. The Media Specialist will use books purchased to create a reading opportunity in the form of Story Walks for these Buddy Readers.

A Story Walk is made using the pages of picture books to tell stories. Each page is posted on a sign in sequential order from the beginning to the end of each tale. Pages are laminated to provide protection from the outdoor elements.

The reading activity will promote intermediate students reading independently to primary students. This independent reading practice will take place as the students walk through each of the stories and read the pages as posted on yard signs. This activity will also serve as a model to younger students who are not yet fluent readers.

These following media standards/benchmarks will be addressed in this grant
For Primary students
Read as a personal activity
1.2 Select listening and viewing resources for enjoyment and information.
K.1.2.1 Participate in listening and viewing activities (e.g., story times, songs).

Score reading progress
5.1 Engage in literacy-based motivational program and activities.
K.5.1.1 Participate in school library activities and reading celebrations (e.g., story times, puppet plays).

For intermediate students
Read as a personal activity
1.1 Select and read literary and informational texts at an appropriate reading level.
3.1.1.1 Choose age and ability appropriate literature to read based on interest or curriculum need.

Score reading progress
5.1 Engage in literacy-based motivational program and activities.
3.5.1.1 Participate in school library activities and reading celebrations (e.g., character parades, author visits).

These are part of the READS- FLORIDA’S K-12 INTEGRATED LIBRARY MEDIA READING GUIDELINES: https://www.fldoe.org/academics/standards/subject-areas/library-media-services-instructional-t/library-media-services.stml

The Story Walk experience will also support the following Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS):
For Primary students
K.RL.3.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).
K.RL.3.9 With prompting and support, compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar stories.

For intermediate students
LAFS.3.RF.4.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
a. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.
b. Read on-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
c. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

Benefits to my students

Purchasing books, yards signs, and lamination will provide supplies for Story Walk opportunities one to two times per month. This regularity and consistency will benefit our students both directly and indirectly:

1) The younger students will have an increase in time spent on reading as a personal activity. It is likely that these students will feel encouraged to choose to read independently more often when they return to their classrooms. Their focus on reading lessons may also improve because they will see the value in learning how to read fluently.

2) The older students will have increased time spent on reading as an independent practice. In turn, they are likely to recognize their worth as fluent readers when partnered with younger students. Their desire to be better readers may also increase because they will want to perform well as they read for younger students, helping them to achieve their personal best in reading and in school overall.

Budget Narrative

Books, yard signs, and film for laminating. Books have been approved by the Media Specialist and the newly formed Media Advisory Committee will review the list in October for further approval. Copyright information has been reviewed through the ASLC (Association for Library Service to Children), and it will be adhered to in its entirety.

“The pages you use can not be altered in any way, the pages can not be scanned or reproduced without permission. You can add supplementary information around the pages, but you can not alter them. If you want to alter the pages of the books, be sure to seek permissions from the publisher.”
