Goal

Our goal is to explore Florida’s fossil history and document, through art, the plants and animals who once lived here.

What will be done with my students

Each grade level will begin by exploring real Florida fossils found in the Peace River. We will use maps to show the locations where they were found and learn about the fossilization process. Pre-K through first grade will create paintings of Megalodon sharks and glue a real, fossilized shark tooth in its mouth. Second and third grade students will create a crayon resist painting, showing each of the fossil layers. Fourth and fifth grade students will create agamographs of an animal from our fossilized past that is related to a modern-day animal. For example, giant sloths and sloths, hipparion three toed horses and modern horses, or dugongs and manatees. Agamographs are accordion folding perspective art showing two images. Intermediate students will also discuss the many possible reasons these species no longer exist, including ice- ages and the ever-changing Florida coastline.

Benefits to my students

Our students will have the opportunity to see and hold real fossils found in Florida. This will generate curiosity about our prehistoric past and illustrate the many interesting creatures from Florida’s past. Their investigations of the fossils will help prepare them for future science courses while reinforcing craftmanship and composition.

Budget Narrative

The art supplies will be used throughout each grade level as they create their paintings featuring Florida’s fossils.
