Original Grant Overview
Goal
My goal is to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and learning from their mistakes. Using vertical whiteboards in a Thinking Classroom will enhance student engagement, encourage critical thinking, and foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Four vertical magnetic whiteboards will be mounted to the wall at student level for easy access.
What will be done with my students
Students will be provided with a math problem that they will work through in small groups on the various whiteboards. Working through math problems, step by step within each small group resulting in the solution is the goal. Benchmark Standards being addressed through this project; ( MA.K12.MTR.4.1 Engage in discussions that reflect on the mathematical thinking of self and others.)
This promotes active participation and helps students see the problem-solving process while explaining their thinking to the rest of the class. ( MA.K12.MTR.1.1 Actively participate in effortful learning both individually and collectively. & MA.K12.MTR.7.1 Apply mathematics to real-world contexts.)
During problem solving sessions, small groups of students will be assigned challenging math concepts such as comparing fractions greater than one and mixed numbers. Students will create models to demonstrate their thinking of how and why converting a fraction greater than one can be equivalent to a mixed number of the same value. Using the whiteboard, students will present their solutions, steps, and thought processes to their peers, promoting deeper understanding while encouraging students to organize thoughts and gain insight into the challenges of problem solving. ( MA.K12.MTR.2.1 Demonstrate understanding by representing problems in multiple ways.)
Benefits to my students
White boards will emphasize the advantages of collaboration and increased engagement of students to create visual representations and models of mathematical concepts or real-world problems. Lessons on the whiteboards would be incorporated into my math instruction to encourage students’ sharing of work with others, fostering discussion and critique.
Documentation would also be used as a basis for class discussions, showcasing successful strategies, student feedback, and learning from mistakes.
Budget Narrative
Supplies for the year would include 6 boxes of expo markers, erasers, liquid cleaner besides the boards. The 4 vertical magnetic whiteboards would be mounted in the classroom.
