Will be a continuation of a positive productive implementation of mind, music, fine motor, and gross motor activities. As an art teacher at Sunrise Elementary for the first year here I am pleased to assist with physical activities on Wednesday weekly. Wednesday in the art room is a concept of utilizing head to toe movements with art and a twist of musical chairs. It has been highly effective for all age groups and additional supplies would thrill my rock star students. `

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 450

At the time I wrote and accepted this grant funding I was implementing a one day of physical activities on Wednesday to assisted hours required for PE in the art room. Soon after my schedule was changed. I no longer had a physical activity day. Classes were split and lunch duty filled empty spots. At our Teams meeting regarding funds, I was advised that grant can be implemented in a similar situation. I turned a negative into a positive occurrence. This grant was only being beneficial to the classes that met every Wednesday, so 1/5 of the school population. As an art teacher I have executed a week into muti week lessons for students to complete if absence occurred. Many students value the abilities to complete their projects and bring home to share with their families. Many do not have the supplies at home. These also are the lessons that count on their report cards for grades. The week after the multi week lesson tables is set up with supplies needed for the graded art. Other tables are set up to work collaboratively with their peers. These new materials were incorporated into these weeks. The great part of the change in rotation, is the WHOLE school was able to utilize these FUTURES grant items.

Another table with the roles of paper and coloring supplies and dot markers were regularly a station. This table was creating posters for their teachers sharing positive words, spring break, and teacher appreciation. Students were thrilled to have the opportunity to make a gift as a team for their teachers. This in turn was extended to the teacher having benefits from this grant.

Another positive aspect of this muti table stations is that students that tend to not focus and apply 100 percent realized that if their art was incomplete, they would finish with others that were absent and an incomplete. They focused more to be able to exchange collaboratively with their peers at table rotation. Knowing that another form of art will be available encouraged production at an expected rate. This also provides students that are mandatory to have additional time for their grade to provide accommodations that are required.

Some weeks a couple things are out and provided as a prize to participate for the last few minutes of class. The music has been played weekly as the students create. It has become a positive staple in my daily class session after directions and supplies have been provided.

As you can see these materials have been a wonderful part of the whole school.

The students have gratefully appreciated the supplies in this grant and they were provided learning skills that would not have been available with regular school budgets.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Will be a continuation of a positive productive implementation of mind, music, fine motor, and gross motor activities. As an art teacher at Sunrise Elementary for the first year here I am pleased to assist with physical activities on Wednesday weekly. Wednesday in the art room is a concept of utilizing head to toe movements with art and a twist of musical chairs. It has been highly effective for all age groups and additional supplies would thrill my rock star students. `

What will be done with my students

The art room is set up weekly with ten tables that are in the center of the room. Each table has a different type of fine motor activity. These can consist of sensory items, collaborative building, memory building, creative 3D elements, spatial recognition, and creative learning. There are also elements of depth perception, balance and cause and effect. A standard song of beats is played for 2 minutes as they walk around the tables in a circle clockwise. When the music stops, they all freeze. They are to sit at the closest chair and work with peers by accident and not by choice. Students are reminded prior to each week that not following safety procedures and rules will forfeit their fine motor 2-minute interaction. Classical music and cd exercise Instruction would like to be added to this routine.
Classical music would be introduced during the fine motor activities every two minutes. Classical music can enhance the brain’s functions and the nervous system. This music is known to correlate with a positive mood. The calming effect and lower beat integrated during the seated activities can become a learned trait of transition of focus.

Benefits to my students

Music can make you stronger, build your immune system and assist in your communication skills. Gross motor activities can improve eye and hand coordination, peer planning, and locomotor skills. These activities will also enhance appreciation of working together with others regardless of personal differences. These materials will be used year after year to enhance and support all students and their physical fitness requirements. Help me to help Sunrise Students, HEAD to toe ….. Let’s Go!!
