With the tools and supplies that were purchased through this grant, students successfully learned how to use a punch needle tool, thread a needle, sew fabric and create a 6” wall hanging. They used the elements of art; color, texture and shape to make a unique design. Students learned about the different types of fiber arts and embroidery. They gained a greater appreciation for embroidery and learned skills they can use throughout their lifetime – the life skill of sewing.

The students truly loved this project. Many students created more than one design and wanted to create more. Because of the positive student engagement and feedback, I plan on growing our fiber arts curriculum in the future. Thank you so much to the generous donation for allowing this experience to happen in the classroom. It was a very exciting time in art class!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Each student will learn how to sew and create their own unique punch needle textile project. They will discover the basics of sewing and how it is a fundamental skill that can be used for the rest of their life. The hope is that students will gain insight on how clothing, homewares, upholstery and other textile items are made both by hand and machine.

What will be done with my students

Students will learn the basics of sewing and textile arts including threading a needle and designing an embroidery wall hanging. Punch needle is used to create pillows, rugs and decorative wall hangings. It is created by using a special needle that “punches” to create loops of thread or yarn on fabric.

The project will run for 3 weeks. 6, 7, and 8th grade students receive art every day.
We will start with an art history presentation of textile and needlework, including visual examples that show the style range and purpose of textile design from the 18th century until now. Students will begin with getting familiar and comfortable with different sewing and embroidery tools. They will receive explicit instruction on how to sew various stitches and will practice the stitches. They will then move into designing their own punch needle pattern on fabric canvas followed by creating their punch needle embroidery. Each work will be finished to display. I am taking into consideration students with disabilities and accommodations; the punch needle tool is large in size and easy to manipulate with fine motor skill issues – all students can take part in the project with fewer obstacles.

I envision the punch needle and embroidery sewing basics to be a permanently integrated project. Most materials can be used for many years.

I will implement this lesson with 6th, 7th and 8th graders (approx. 127 students). This lesson will teach several aspects of the Florida Visual Arts Curriculum Standards and support the Social Studies Curriculum.

Benefits to my students

Insight: I polled the class asking what they would be most interested to learn in art this year. Sewing was one of the top voiced interests. Based on student input and desire, this project will leverage their interest and engage their curiosity while following learning objectives.
Students will learn fundamental sewing skills that can be used for the rest of their lives.
They will end the project with a finished wall hanging that they can take home and enjoy.
