This grant will provide colorful materials in the kindergarten classrooms at Indian River Elementary. My goal is for us teachers to have the option to print color copies when necessary so students can decipher things by color; not just shape or size. We do not have the option to print in color from copy center unless approved well ahead of time and have a specific code. This printer will stay in the Kindergarten pod and allow us to choose certain activities for ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies and Writing to print in color.
Over summer I print an excess amount of colored documents for my classroom: letters for a word wall, the alphabet, numbers and ten frames, number line, I can statements, the daily schedule, calendar, classroom rules and so much more. All these must be different colors so the students can easily differentiate between each concept. If everything was black and white in my room, students wouldn’t have a way to make connections with the learning tools, such as my alphabet, number line, etc.

What will be done with my students

SC.K.N.1.5: Recognize that learning can come from careful observation.
SC.K.E.5.2 Recognize the repeating pattern of day and night.
SC.K.P.8.1 Sort objects by observable properties, such as size, shape, color, temperature (hot or cold), weight (heavy or light) and texture.
****Worksheets provided on canvas to utilize tools to make observations were not able to be used black and white… students could not clearly see the pictures with a magnifying glass without the different colors. ****
MA.K.DP.1.1 Collect and sort objects into categories and compare the categories by counting the objects in each category. Report the results verbally, with a written numeral or with drawings. Example: A bag containing 10 circles, triangles and rectangles can be sorted by shape and then each category can be counted and compared.
MA.K.GR.1.4 Find real-world objects that can be modeled by a given two- or three-dimensional figure. Figures are limited to circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, spheres, cubes, cones and cylinders.
SS.K.G.1.4 Differentiate land and water features on simple maps and globes.
Expressions through the Arts: Skills, Knowledge, Concepts
- Identifies primary and secondary colors, as well as a variety of lines, shapes and textures in a work.
- Identifies a pattern as repeated lines, shapes and/or colors.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit over 130 Kindergarten students in the classroom as well as students for years to come. Students will be able to benefit from colored materials in the classroom and will be able to differentiate and focus of the appropriate colors of things. For example, when we are talking about a letter, if all my letters are black, I can’t ensure my kids are looking at the proper letter. However, if I say we are looking at the “blue letter B which is next to the green A”, I know my students have another visual connection to ensure proper learning.
Another example why color copies will benefit our students is we have been learning about the five senses and more specifically, sight. One of the activities was to print out cards to use a magnifying glass on. One page included tiny images and the other page was regular sized images. Using the printer we are provided with at school, the tiny images were impossible to see in order to compare to the large ones because it was just black and gray.
Currently, we only have access to a black and white printer in our pod, if it is working properly at the time. By receiving this Epson Eco Tank printer, my students will benefit from nice, clean, COLORFUL, pages for them to see and work on throughout the school year.
