Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 750

Our students learned so much through our rehearsal of the production of the Lion King.  Students learned to design and create costumes, stage makeup looks, and work on stage technology.  Additionally, the worked on public speaking skills, teamwork, dancing, singing, and acting.  Our entire school of students will get to see the production the week of May 20th, when we produce the actual musical.  Thank you Futures for this opportunity!

In the Fall, students will collaborate in small groups to create and perform scenes from various plays and musicals (Frozen, Matilda, The Little Mermaid). This performance will be open to all students at the school, allowing nearly 800 students to experience live theatre. Students will work together to apply techniques in stage makeup, prop design, directing, and movement to create this performance. In the spring, the theatre club will perform The Lion King, Jr. All students at SCE will be able to attend the performance at no cost. While the music teacher will direct the production, students will be involved in every step of the process, including creative decisions, dancing, singing, designing production materials, creating props, making costumes, and applying stage makeup. Students will also work with aspects of technical theatre such as lighting and sound.

Benefits to my students

This grant will help to establish the first ever theatre club at Spruce Creek Elementary School. Going forward, this program will take place every year at SCE. Students will learn performance practices, dancing, singing, prop creation, stage makeup, and acting. They will read approved, creative theatrical texts and collaborate to analyze the stories. They will also build their confidence and oral communication skills through performing for one another and local audiences. This program will not only benefit students in the theatre club, but will give all students the opportunity to experience theatrical performances throughout the year and collaborate to conduct their own analysis of characters, artistic choices, and possible career opportunities in the arts.
