Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 80

This year we implemented a new class called Technical Theatre Design and Production.  This class with the help of Theatre Honors was geared towards bringing Deltona High School productions to life by giving students the opportunity to be involved technically.  Our stage crew worked behind the scenes for Icarus, Matilda, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse, and The Trial of Existence.

The Greek Myth of Icarus is a tale of love and forgiveness; of hubris; of the inner drive for flight that exists in all of us.  Our class took on this Greek tragedy and has took flight exploring various realms of theatre from stage combat to puppetry to ensemble work! Artistically, Icarus has a plethora of opportunities for creativity and ensemble work.

“We may be small but we’re quite tough”- Matilda. These words ring true as we continue to build our theatre program. For Matilda, we had 80 students involved with this show including our Timbercrest Elementary students.  It’s always exciting to see our students work hard to bring our vision to life! We had students in various stage crew and leadership positions (Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, Assistant Director, Assistant Music Director, Dance Captain, Publicity Coordinator, Props Coordinator, Costume Coordinator, Lights and Sound Coordinators). We were able to purchase tools and materials needed to create costumes, props and set pieces. Matilda was a huge success with a great audience turnout!

And lastly, we concluded our season with the plays, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and The Trial of Existence, which were directed by students.  This is an incredible opportunity where our Student Directors were able to apply their leadership skills and lead stage crew to create set, props, and costumes. Our students were able to SHINE on stage and behind the scenes!

We THANK YOU for investing in our students and providing them with an outlet to express themselves on stage!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This is my 3rd year as the Director of Theatre at Deltona High School and one of my goals is to continue to build the program by giving students additional creative opportunities inside and outside the classroom. This year, I have implemented a new class at Deltona HS called Technical Theatre Design and Production. This class has been created to support the technical needs of our productions. We continue to strive to have professional productions to engage our community!

What will be done with my students

Students will be supporting our shows by creating costumes, props, and set pieces as well as designing lights and sound. Our mainstage musical of the year is Matilda amongst other productions! This particular show has an immense number of technical needs including elaborate sets, lighting, costumes, and props. This is a wonderful opportunity to integrate technology with the arts. In addition, we will have students in various stage crew leadership positions (Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, Assistant Director, Assistant Music Director, Dance Captain, Publicity Coordinator, Props Coordinator, Costume Coordinator, Lights and Sound Coordinators, Hair/Makeup). Our students will need the tools to be successful in their leadership positions.

Benefits to my students

Our students will explore the technical aspects of the show by using critical thinking skills and collaboration when creating and designing.
