In addition to Odyssey of the Mind, this year I am implementing an exciting new program called PLAYGROUND: A safe place where you can create, discover, and explore what interests you. This is a student driven bi-monthly program where students choose various theatre related stations that interest them. In addition, I have been involved as an Odyssey of the Mind coach and judge for several years and I am excited to continue to bring this creative, problem solving program to our theatre students. My past teams have won at the District level, State level, and World Finals. A few years back my team of 5th graders were 1st place in the World for their theatrical solution. This is a program that I am very passionate about and excited to introduce to our Theatre 2 students specifically. Here is a helpful link which explains the program in detail:

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 70

I have always been a big believer of giving students CHOICE and hands on opportunities to create. This year I implemented an exciting new program called PLAYGROUND: A safe place where you can create, discover, and explore what interests you. This is a student driven program where students choose various theatre related stations that interest them.  All of my Theatre classes were able to partake in Playground.  Some popular stations included: costume design, creating props, practicing cold reading skills, playwriting, and set design challenge using legos. In addition, we were able to purchase a Cricut machine and are using it to embellish costumes and props.

In addition, our Theatre 2 classes enjoyed Odyssey of the Mind.  They chose the following problems to solve:

The Most Dramatic Problem Ever!!! “OMG! Can you believe that happened? Teams will create a humorous performance about a dramatic character that overreacts to common events.  The performance will showcase different theatrical styles as the character overreacts.  However, in one situation their reaction is justified, but they are ignored.  The performance will also include something that grows and a costume that represents two characters.”

Opening Night AnticsThere is a saying in the theatre that no matter what happens during a performance, the show must go on. The same is true in OM! For this problem, teams will portray the Opening Night of an original play based on the theme of a classic story. The Opening Night performance will not go as planned and will include a set malfunction, unexpected sound effects, a team-created antic and a theater critic. Despite the Opening Night Antics, the show is a success! The creative emphases of the problem are on the performance, how the theme of the classic story is presented, the set malfunction, the unexpected sound effects, the team-created antic, and the theater critic character. The Spirit of the Problem is to create an original performance depicting the opening night of a play that did not go as planned. The play will be based off of the theme of a selected classic story. During the presentation of the Opening Night of the play a set malfunction, an unexpected sound effect, and a team-created antic will occur. There will also be a theater critic character that deems the show a success.

What will be done with my students

PLAYGROUND: Twice a month, stations will be set up and students will choose what interests them. Some stations are: Costume Design, Set Design, Makeup Design, Technical Theatre, Acting/Cold Reading, Puppetry, Film, Playwriting, Dance Choreography.

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND: I will be breaking our Theatre 2 class into small collaborative groups of 5-7 students. Depending on interest and commitment, I am hoping to establish 1 competition team comprised of 5-7 students each. However, all my Theatre 2 students will be exposed to Odyssey of the Mind and have the opportunity to creatively solve long term and spontaneous problems in the classroom. I will also select students with strong leadership skills to be an assistant coach. We will be choosing between Problem 3 (The Classics) or Problem 5 (Performance).

Both PLAYGROUND and Odyssey of the Mind are theatrically based and creative outlets which incorporates the following theatre standards:

TH.912.C.2.1 Explore and describe possible solutions to production or acting challenges and select the solution most likely to produce desired results.

TH.912.S.3.2 Exercise artistic discipline and collaboration to achieve ensemble in rehearsal and performance.

TH.912.H.3.3 Apply knowledge of non-theatre content areas to enhance presentations of characters, environments, and actions in performance.

TH.912.F.1.1 Synthesize research, analysis, and imagination to create believable characters and settings.

TH.912.F.3.3 Exhibit independence, discipline, and commitment to the theatre process when working on assigned projects and productions.

TH.912.H.3.2 Compare the applications of various art forms used in theatre production.

The beauty about PLAYGROUND and Odyssey of the Mind is that the students do it all! With a limited budget students will come up with original ideas while creating as well as learning something new.
PLAYGROUND specifically gives students the freedom to pursue their personal interests and discover hidden talents.

In Odyssey of the Mind, students will come up with original ideas while creating sets, costumes, props, music, and their script. For instance, Odyssey of the Mind would rather you create a costume out of duct tape than purchase one on Amazon. In addition, each long-term problem has specific criteria and challenges in which students will need to solve. The more original the solution, the better! Students will practice solving spontaneous problems which helps encourage thinking on your feet. Students may be given a
1) Verbal Spontaneous problem which may require dramatization, improvisation, or delivering a creative response.
2) Hands On Spontaneous problem which requires teams to physically create a tangible solution.
3) Verbal Hands-On Spontaneous problem requires teams to create a tangible solution which includes a verbal component.

Benefits to my students

Both PLAYGROUND and Odyssey of the Mind incorporates the 4 C’s of 21st Century Learning: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity. These programs emphasize and value creativity, originality, teamwork and thinking outside the box. Once exposed, students will see the world with a different lens…the world will be brimming with possibility! Students will become problem solvers and learn how to collaborate with others when brainstorming. Students will think on their feet, learn to work as a team, and encourages divergent thinking. It stresses that students must do it all which builds self-confidence, independence, and pride of ownership. As a teacher, I wholeheartedly believe that every child has a GIFT! PLAYGROUND and Odyssey of the Mind encourages students to discover their gifts and talents!

Budget Narrative

I will need to purchase supplies, resources, and items to support the various stations in PLAYGROUND. The Odyssey of the Mind Membership is needed to access the curriculum and problems which will be infused in my curriculum. If we decide to select a competition team to compete at Regionals, there could be additional expenses. Each team can spend up to $125 in materials for their set, props, and costumes. In order to do spontaneous problems in the classroom, I will need to purchase supplies and resources. Thank you for your consideration!
