Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

The new cameras were put immediately to the test, giving the students flexibility to record the annual Dance Showcase at Mainland High School. The experience was the first large production project taken on by the students currently in the program and was made possible with the additon of the three new cameras.

Over the next few weeks, the upper level students will use the cameras to complete their final projects, which includes a montage of interviews with graduating seniors for the senior video. Television 1 students will use the cameras to produce a satire video for their final project.

While the immediated number of students impacted is 75, that's. spread across four class levels and four classes. Next year will tentatively see an increase in the number of students impacted, when there will be six TV Production classes. We look forward to seeing all of the incredibly creative video productions the students will produce with these cameras and are grateful for the donation and the opportunity it has already provided.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

$750 to purchase five (5) video camcorders for Digital Video Technology students

What will be done with my students

The Mainland High School Digital Video Technology programs camcorder equipment is very dated. Of the 8 Canon Vixia HF series on hand, three cannot charge a battery and several cameras do not record both video and audio. The camcorder model and design is no longer made by Canon. Any existing models are renewed and cost twice as much as the camera requested.

Benefits to my students

Students are given the opportunity to produce individual video projects with support of their group members. The cameras would meet the following Digital Video Curriculum Frameworks:
08.0 Use basic camera equipment (DVT 1); 18.0 Use television production equipment for a digital video production (DVT 2); 24.0 Demonstrate the ability to complete the production process for an advanced video production project (DVT 3)

Budget Narrative

I took over the DVT courses at Mainland High School in the middle of the 2022-2023 school year. I was told the program had not had a full time teacher for the courses for three years. The teachers that came through during those years either had teachers with TV Production experience but no teaching experience and vice-versa. This is my fifth full year to teach the course, my first at Mainland. Having the cameras will revive the program immediately, giving students a chance to complete their projects on campus without having to wait for their turn to use a working camera.
