Goal

To foster a culture of reading and literacy that engages our youngest learners and the involvement of our school community and beyond.

What will be done with my students

Our youngest Sharks (VPK learners) will be introduced to reading and literacy by engaging in read-a-louds that feature cultural observations, annual celebrations, STEAM, and S.E.L. themes. This learning approach will feature several books and/or stories read by members of our school community, (e.g., Administration, book club students, invited guests, or local authors). At the conclusion of each read-a-loud, a specific trinket and/or item that symbolizes the story is introduced, discussed, and placed in a personalized mason jar. Each of the trinkets/items placed in the mason jar is revisited at the conclusion of each read aloud--allowing them to compare, contrast, and re-connect to each story.
Early Learning Developmental domains, (e.g., Approaches to Learning, Literacy & Language; STEM, S.E.L., etc.) will be integrated in this programming as well as elements of our B.E.S.T. Standards:
ELA.K.R.1 Reading Prose and Poetry
ELA.K.R.1.1: Describe the main character(s), setting, and important events in a story.
ELA.K.R.1.3: Explain the roles of author and illustrator of a story.
ELA.K.R.3 Reading Across Genres
ELA.K.R.3.1: Identify and explain descriptive words in text(s).
ELA.K.R.3.2. Retell a text (story) orally to enhance comprehension.
ELA.K.R.3.3: Compare and contrast character's experiences in stories.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit by this project-based learning when they listen, review, discuss, and eventually decide and/or discover for themselves which story or stories they connected with the most. At the end of the year each student will receive his/her own personalized mason jar with the trinkets/items to share and retell the books and their stories.
Note: A summary and an activity for each of the books will accompany the jars.

Budget Narrative

The goal is to feature 10 to 15 titles. The quantity of books to purchase depends on the number of individuals and/or participants (community) involved and the number of times I can schedule the read-aloud. Selection of trinkets/items depends on themes and ability to find something that best represents the story; followed by availability.

Items

# Item Cost

2 Clear Plastic Mason Jars (24) and vinyl $30.00
