Goal

My goal is for teachers to have access to fidget items throughout the year when they have a student who is in need of additional support to focus on lessons and assignments.

What will be done with my students

Since the start of my teaching career, I have had to purchase items for my classroom with my own money. The items that I have spent the most money on are fidget items. I have taught many students throughout the years that needed additional support to focus on lessons and assignments. Fidget items have helped my students immensely, but they can be very pricey! I would love to have the funds to bring my project “Wiggle While You Work” a reality. I know how frustrating it can be for teachers when they need fidget items, and the school is unable to provide them with any or the teachers are unable to purchase them because of the cost. My project would give teachers the opportunity to check out fidget items for their students. With this grant I can purchase items such as wobble cushions, wobble seats, bouncy bands and scoop rockers. These items can be checked out by the teachers’ long term or short term based on the students need during the school year. When the student is no longer in need of the item the teacher would return the item to me. This would give other teachers the opportunity to use them throughout the year. This project would be permanently integrated throughout the years and would be implemented as soon as possible.
This project connects with the science standard SC.K.P.14.1 Recognize the five senses and related body parts. Our senses can be overlooked at times on their importance to help students learn. Sensory items can easily be integrated in a students day to help calm their nerves, relieve stress and serves as a distraction in an overstimulating environment. Utilizing the fidget items will help students become more successful in the classroom.

Benefits to my students

The whole school will benefit from this project. The expected outcome is for teachers to have the opportunity to check out fidget items for their students who need additional support to focus on lessons and assignments and for the students to have an outlet while working to be successful in the classroom.
