Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 148

The bad first. I had a rough time getting quality products from the company that supplied the wipe boards. Saying this, they did finally respond and gift me with an extra set. Once that was cleared up, the lessons went very much like the session during the summer institute where the grant idea came from. I enjoyed the mobility it gave me to see student work without even moving. Having the ability to say things like, check Elizabeth's group, or Franklin may have an idea to share, was a great addition to a lesson. It was also nice to leave some great work up for others to see throughout the day. Obviously the student collaboration piece of the look fors, helped make the days when I was being observed hit this mark out of the park. The boards were even useful when not even being used as a way to discuss quadrants, axis, and charachteristics of graphs of all kinds. My only regret is not having enough wall space to space students out more. All the supplies received were well used. Finally, many of my students were without teachers for one, even two years(7th and 8th grades). the second VBA saw us make tremendous gains to getting these students caught up to the district averages. Only 2% points off.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Utilize tested manipulative tools that promote individual and collaborative student engagement.

What will be done with my students

Students will toggle between group work and individual work utilizing action with a goal at the end other than just right or wrong. Students will work in groups, standing up, at the wall. In their groups, students will analyze, discuss, and try, problems that are or can be progressively harder. Rules are in place so one person is a scribe, the others tell the scribe what to put on either the open writing sheet, or the graph side. The roles change so everyone gets an opportunity to listen, talk, and be part of the action in differing roles. The system being used here is called Building Thinking Classrooms. This is a proven system.
The individual part is utilizing another proven engagement system called Versa Tiles. This system utilizes sets of common problems to build fluency in procedural as well as real life tasks. Students answer 12 questions in a set and place tiles in the order marked by the instructions. When complete, the placed tiles make patterns on the back. Match the correct pattern, give yourself a pat on the back. Miss the pattern, and go over the questions again.

Benefits to my students

Every standard can be worked on using on of these two systems. These can also allow me additional activities to use during tutoring since both come with many activities to choose from. Also, teachers in this district are using them and can, will, and already have shared their activities.
Some standards are NSO.1.1, AR.1.7, 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.7, 3.6, 3.8, F.2.1

Budget Narrative

The wipe boards are to post around the room. I have classes over 30. The markers and erasers are to use with these boards. The special wipebook pens do not erase as easily for more intricate work. The Building Thinking Classrooms is the guide to this process. The tile cases are needed to go with the activity books. The books may overlap activities, but never with the same problems.
