Goal

By giving our students and parents easy access to a wide range of reading topics and levels, the purpose of this community driven free library is to help to foster a neighborhood with a love of reading that will lead to better readers and improved achievement scores.

What will be done with my students

The library will be installed after it is received, assembled, and students have chosen the best location for the library to be seen and utilized in their neighborhood. Books will be selected by students in our library media classes, Grades K-5, and will be added to the Little Library immediately after. Fifth graders in our News and Media Club will then work on promotion and marketing of our library via our school social media and our weekly school news program. The Little Library program will then be a fully integrated part of our school and maintained for many years to come.

Benefits to my students

Many times, a love of reading starts in the home and moves into the school. The funding of this project is expected to increase a love of reading in our community’s homes by providing awareness and resources. Students who are reading at least 20-30 minutes perform better on state assessments and in school. Over time, students will read more at home and achieve more in school. Being that this is a community project, all our school’s 430 students and families and all of our school’s teachers will benefit from this project.

Free, self-selected books will give students the materials needed to practice and develop the following B.E.S.T. reading skills, and many more, with friends and family:

ELA.1.F.1.1: Locate the title, table of contents, names of author(s) and illustrator(s), and glossary of books.

ELA.2.F.1.1: Identify and describe the main story elements in a story.

ELA.3.R.1.1 Explain how one or more characters develop throughout the plot in a literary text.

ELA.4.R.1.1 Explain how setting events, conflict, and how character development contributes to the plot of a literary text.

ELA.5.R.1.1 Analyze how setting, events, conflict and characterization contribute to the plot of a literary text.

Students will also work on the following Florida's Library Media Guidelines:

Read as a Personal Activity Guideline 1.1 K-5 Select and read literary and informational texts at an appropriate reading level. Choose easy literature to read based on interest or curriculum need.

Read as a Personal Activity Guideline 1.2 K-5 Select listening and viewing resources for enjoyment and information. Participate in listening and viewing activities (e.g., story times, songs).

Read as a Personal Activity Guideline 1.3 K-5 Use community resources for recreational and informational needs. Visit the school or other libraries virtually or in person to access resources.
