Goal

The goal for this grant project is for all kindergarten students at Port Orange Elementary to engage in, learn from, and enjoy learning their alphabet. For this goal to be reached, classroom teachers need to have the “hands on” materials to inspire all students and the variety of learning styles present in the classroom. These resources will provide teachers with the materials to make this happen.

What will be done with my students

The listed materials will be used as fun and engaging ELA centers. Students will become “Alphabet Specialists” with hands-on ways to help them master the lines and curves that form uppercase letters. Skill-building centers will give early learners a hands-on way to explore letters as they follow simple prompts on activity cards to build letters piece by piece using snap-together parts. They will explore their sense of touch—as they search for letters in a sensory tub. Children will be engaged when they reach inside our mystery box and discover kid-pleasing miniatures for every letter of the alphabet! Perfect for independent practice. Students will explore letter sounds, with Teaching Tubs to identify and sort a variety of adorable miniatures, play memory games and build vocabulary skills.

Benefits to my students

Kindergarten students will benefit from these engaging hands-on ELA centers as they grow to love letters and reading. The children will feel inspired and want to learn more about alphabet. Students will take ownership of activities and make personal connections with the variety of miniatures in the teaching tubs. The sensory bins are super engaging to five-year old’s as they are searching for letters. Kindergarten is a time for students to learn using hands on materials while establishing a firm foundation of reading skills.

Budget Narrative

The $936 cost includes hands-on, engaging ELA centers which includes magnetic letter pieces to form each letter, a container of manipulatives for each letter of the alphabet, a sensory tub with beads and letters included for students to identify. Three kindergarten classes/63 students will benefit from materials found at https://www.lakeshorelearning.com/
