Goal

My goal is to provide a space where Champion Elementary Black Bears can build on their positive emotions. The STEM Cafe is the perfect place for students to not only practice positive experiences and interactions but build on necessary skills to be successful in the 21st Century.

What will be done with my students

Students will have an opportunity to visit the STEM Cafe during their special area rotation. When they arrive, they will be greeted at the door and given a menu full of STEM items/activities to choose from. Once they place their order with the hostess, they will be given their table assignment. The tables will contain the standards, materials, and directions for students to get started. Students who choose to help as STEM cafe assistants will wear an apron and travel from area to area. Students will have a chance to practice public communication etiquette in a positive environment at the STEM Cafe. Standards that this grant will satisfy include: Kindergarten; MAFS.K.G.2.5, first through fifth grade; (Standards for Mathematical Practice) SMP.1, Science fourth grade; SC.4.P.10.2, and Science fifth; SC.5.P.10.4.

Benefits to my students

Champion Black bears will learn how to engineer, develop manual dexterity problem-solving skills, improve logical thinking and self-confidence while seeing the importance of teamwork and collaboration. The STEM Cafe also supports VCS Standards for Mathematical Practice as well as science standards for some grade levels. New Futures’ grant additions to the STEM Cafe will support specific math standards for all grade levels.
In kindergarten, students will visit Picasso Tile activity tables to solve problems and model shapes in the real world by building shapes from components (MAFS.K.G.2.5). With adult guidance, kindergartners will also have a chance to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
As students in Grade 1-2 visit Botley the Coding Robot, they will examine problems (tasks) and will make sense of the meaning of the task and find an entry point or a way to start the task. (SMP.1)
Students in grades PreK-2 will practice SEL skills as they enjoy the addition of the LEGO Duplo “Build Me, Emotion” blocks. Students that need to, will manage their emotions while setting goals and working with others in a quiet space at the STEM Cafe.
The Think-fun Rollercoaster will allow students in Grades 3-4 to solve problems and discuss how they solved them. Students will explain to themselves the meaning of a problem and look for ways to solve it. They will be given opportunities to listen to the strategies of others and may try different approaches. (SMP.1)
If granted, the Sillbird STEM 12-in-1 Education Solar Robot will allow 4th and 5th-grade students to satisfy math and science standards. For math, students will practice seeking the meaning of a problem and look for efficient ways to represent and solve it. (SMP.1) In Science, students will Investigate and describe that energy can cause motion or create change (SC.4.P.10.2) as well as investigate and explain that electrical energy can be transformed into heat, light, sound, and mechanical energy. (SC.5.P.10.4)
Flexible seating will allow for the STEM Cafe to offer students more exciting learning spaces where communication and collaboration can ensue.
