Goal

A classroom iPad will be used to enhance and encourage learning in the chorus and keyboard classrooms at Silver Sands Middle School. This technology tool will impact about 150 students.

What will be done with my students

The classroom iPad will be used to enhance goals and standards within the choral and keyboard curriculums. In the chorus classroom, the iPad will be used for singing quizzes and assessments, assist with rehearsals and sectionals, and check understanding of music theory concepts.
In the keyboard classroom, the iPad will be used to check understanding of music theory concepts, assist with individual practice sessions, and provide opportunities for students to work together on piano repertoire.

Chorus Curriculum Standards:
Students will use the iPad to record their singing quizzes for their bi-weekly assessments. These quizzes assess concepts that align with the Volusia County Schools Chorus Curriculum Map. These concepts include: Tone, Breathing, Posture, Sight-Reading, Pitch Discrimination, Pulse & Tempo, Musicianship, and Scales.
In addition, the iPad will have apps installed to serve as tools during rehearsals and small group sectionals. Such apps include: a piano app to check the correct pitches and understanding of the music, music theory apps to assess understanding on musical concepts, sight-reading apps and websites, a voice memo app where I will record the correct notes for students to practice in a group, and other musical practice tools such as a metronome to keep a steady tempo while singing as a group.

Keyboard Curriculum Standards:
The iPad will have apps installed to serve as tools during individual and group practice sessions. Apps such as SimplyPiano, allows students to check their understanding on concepts such as Notes, Rhythm, and Pulse (Concepts in the Volusia County Schools Keyboard Curriculum Map). Students will also be able to use apps to check understanding on music theory concepts. These apps and websites include MusicTheory.net, Breezin’ Thru Theory, and SimplyPiano. Students can also access piano repertoire that they can work on with a partner or small group.

Benefits to my students

The iPad will offer apps and websites to enhance musical learning and will help reach and engage a wider range of students in both chorus and keyboarding classrooms. Some students prefer to practice what they have learned through the means of technology and will be more engaged with technology tools such as an iPad. Additionally, the classroom iPad will provide music theory resources where students can apply the knowledge they have learned and align with both chorus and keyboard curriculum goals and standards.

The classroom iPad will serve as a tool for chorus students to record their singing quizzes. These assessments help encourage individual vocal confidence and understanding of the music. The iPad will also encourage independence while students rehearse in their group sectionals and help provide the tools necessary to keep the sectionals successful.
Piano songs that are offered on the iPad are more colorful and engaging than sheet music and can offer a better experience to students who prefer a more visual learning style.

Bringing technology into the modern classroom can be an imperative part of a child’s learning. An iPad in the chorus and keyboard classroom would be able to bring integration of standard educational methods paired with more technologically advanced methods of learning for students and enhance learning within both classrooms.
