To improve critical thinking and problem solving skills that promote academic and personal development.

What will be done with my students

This will be the 2nd year of the Sunrise Chess Club. We averaged 30 students during our first year, but I would like to increase that number to 40-50 for the 2017-2018 school year.
Students will meet 2x's weekly before school. My trainings/ meetings will systematically teach students the game of chess through discussion, videos and competitive play. Also, I'd like to offer students who cannot arrive for early morning sessions, the opportunity to learn the game of chess during their daily lunch times. Additionally, Sunrise Elementary is a Leader In Me school, therefore we have incorporated the 7 Habits of Leadership into the chess curriculum. Each chess piece represents a leadership habit, with sportsmanship representing Think Win/Win. Each chess club member is asked to choose a focal chess piece and the associated leadership habit, that will serve as his or her reminder of how to positively think through challenges they face. These students are also provided with a small laminated picture of their focal chess piece and the leadership habit paired with it that they are encouraged to keep on their person.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn how strategies used in the game of chess has real world application to problem solving in academic, personal and community settings. Students will develop critical thinking skills, demonstrate improved focus and concentration, increase academic performance, improve problem solving skills, and learn the importance of sportsmanship.

Budget Narrative

We have received donations to help with the purchase of traditional chess sets, however we would like to purchase 2 25" inch tall chess sets to set up in our courtyard to further encourage student learning and participation.
