Goal

The goal of "stacked with STEAM" is to fill our Maker Space's empty cubbies with STEAM supplies and create future artists, architects, engineers, designers, and more creative future careers! 

What will be done with my students

I have created a "Maker Space" with amazing potential for my students, but do not have the funding needed to make my ideas come to fruition. I have 33 empty cubbies/bins awaiting maker space supplies! In art class, my students learn about artists and different art mediums inspired by them to create amazing artwork throughout the year; but I also encourage students to drive their own artwork and teach for artistic behavior. I am transitioning into a partially TAB classroom that encourages student choice in art. With this grant, my students would be provided with the tools for creativity and problem solving independently through choice based art. I have provided many tools for 2D choice art, but do not have enough 3D options.

VA.4.S.1.1- Manipulate tools and materials to achieve diverse effects in personal works of art.

Benefits to my students

As children construct and build, they experiment with many scientific concepts like balance, stability, gravity, and force. Exploring the physical world and properties of matter lets students interact with shapes, weight, and textures they may not usually have the opportunity to use while working with blocks made out of materials like magnets, wood, foam, etc. My students will use the five senses to challenge the laws of physics and cause and effect with their actions while building.

Many mathematical skills are also learned and practiced through working with 3D blocks, magnets, connecting tools, etc. Students learn number sense as they use blocks to count, seriate, add, and take away. Geometry, symmetry, measurement, and spatial sense are also learned with all of the different shapes and compositions. Studies show that block play is fundamental for later cognitive success in learning math, numbers and algebra.

This project also creates an artistic environment that ALL students can enjoy and benefit from.
