Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

My students really enjoyed our Aerogardens! So far, we have planted a variety of herbs, tomatoes, and lettuce. It truly benefited the students to be able to observe life cycles up close. Prior to planting, we discussed plant needs (water, soil, sunlught, etc.). As we planted, we discussed how the Aerogarden was equipped to meet each of those needs. The students are overjoyed each day to be able to come in and see how much their plants have grown. I am really looking forward to contininuing to track the progress of each plant, and the students are as well! Thank you to our donors who made this possible!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to purchase a hydroponic growth system for my classroom in order to demonstrate what a plant needs to grow, as well as how the life cycles of plants differ.

What will be done with my students

I will purchase the hydroponic system, and set it up in our classroom. The students will choose different seed types to plant. We will discuss the plant needs, and how this system will meet those needs. We will observe the plants as they grow, and discuss the similarities and differences. We will also complete a plant observation journal. I will assign students to check water and food levels, and to make sure the grow light is turned on or off each day.

Benefits to my students

The second grade science curriculum has multiple standards that this project will meet. SC.2.L.16.1 states that students will be able to "observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies." We will be observing different plant life cycles using our grow system. SC.2.L.17.1 states that students will be able to "compare and contrast the basic needs that all living things, including humans, have for survival." We will be discussing what our plants need for survival, and comparing that to what we (humans) need for survival. I believe that seeing the plant life cycle and giving plants what they need in person will be beneficial to the students learning these standards.

Budget Narrative

My budget includes the hydroponic grow system, listed as item number 1. It also includes a variety of seed pods for the students to choose from (items 2-7). Item 6 is liquid plant food for the system. Item 7 is a variety pack of extra seed pod supplies.
