My goal is to improve the understanding of weathering and erosion in our 4th and 5th grade students by offering a hands on experience in my STEAM/Technology special area class at Indian River Elementary. This would increase student engagement and improve standardized test scores in science.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 189

My 4th and 5th grade classes loved using the hands weathering kits purchased with this grant.  Weathering and erosion is a slow process in nature and hard to observe.  These kits allow the students to simulate erosion.  I believe this made a lasting impact and understanding of these standards for our students.  The students loved creating augmented reality examples of erosion as well. The smiles are their faces is evidence of the learning experienced with these kits.  Thank you!

Erosion

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to improve the understanding of weathering and erosion in our 4th and 5th grade students by offering a hands on experience in my STEAM/Technology special area class at Indian River Elementary. This would increase student engagement and improve standardized test scores in science.

What will be done with my students

Indian River Elementary is a Title 1 school in Edgewater. I work closely with the 4th and 5th grade teachers to provide meaningful learning experiences for all of our students. Our students often misunderstand the difference between erosion and weathering. I believe that if students could practice and demonstrate weathering and erosion using the kits, we could then create a model using augmented reality on our iPads.
Each kit will include age-appropriate materials, interactive experiments, and comprehensive teacher resources to ensure effective implementation. Students will explore topics such as weather patterns, precipitation, wind, erosion, and its impact on our environment. These kits will align with our existing curriculum, reinforcing classroom instruction and enabling students to see and explore real-world applications of the scientific concepts they learn.

Benefits to my students

SC.4.E.6.4
Describe the basic differences between physical weathering (breaking down of rock by wind, water, ice, temperature change, and plants) and erosion (movement of rock by gravity, wind, water, and ice).

Weathering and erosion may be difficult for students to see in reality as it is a slow process. Hands on experiments would allow the students to see the phenomenon in less time. Students can then could create a version on the iPad using time-lapse and augmented reality.

Budget Narrative

The "Changes in Land" kits from Lakeshore Learning support 3-4 students at a time. We currently have an average of 23 students in each of our 4th and 5th grade classes. 7 kits would allow smaller groups, allowing the students more hand on experience.
