Students will maintain a comprehensive sketchbook to aid in their creative journeys. This resource will allow them to develop their ideas by responding to prompts about artists, artwork, cultures, techniques, sketching, and writing processes. Students can achieve learning objectives throughout the school year by utilizing these sketchbooks. Students can refer to their sketchbook notes to develop ideas further. Most students do not have sketchbooks, so the need for these materials is significant.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 176

Students used their sketchbooks daily to complete their bellwork assignments, where they studied about artists and art techniques. They also used sketchbooks to plan their ideas before working on their final artworks. Students tried techniques using various materials to see what would work best for their future works.

Students also critiqued artworks by adding notes about various artists and described, analyzed, interpreted, and evaluated their overall impressions of the works.

The sketchbooks were a valuable addition to the students' experiences in their art courses this year.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will maintain a comprehensive sketchbook to aid in their creative journeys. This resource will allow them to develop their ideas by responding to prompts about artists, artwork, cultures, techniques, sketching, and writing processes. Students can achieve learning objectives throughout the school year by utilizing these sketchbooks. Students can refer to their sketchbook notes to develop ideas further. Most students do not have sketchbooks, so the need for these materials is significant.

What will be done with my students

VA.912.S.1.4 Demonstrate effective and accurate use of art vocabulary throughout the art-making process. Students will use sketchbooks to write art vocabulary definitions and examples. This will occur during bellwork activities and lesson introductions. Students will be taught to use art vocabulary when journaling in their sketchbooks.
VA.912.S.3.10 Develop skill in sketching and mark-making to plan, execute, and construct two-dimensional images or three-dimensional models. Students will use sketchbooks to develop their drawing skills when they are in the planning stages of creating an artwork.
VA.912.S.2.6 Incorporate skills, concepts, and media to create images from ideation to resolution. Students will utilize their drawing skills with various techniques and different media. This will help students use synthesis between the concept they are developing and the media they are using to complete a final artwork.
VA.912.C.1.4 Apply art knowledge and contextual information to analyze how content and ideas are used in works of art. Students will apply art knowledge within written responses when interpreting works of art.

Benefits to my students

Students can keep track of their academic progress by taking ownership of their sketchbooks. This will provide a meaningful experience, as students can personalize their sketchbook and make it their own. Students can refer to documented vocabulary and techniques to help them further their learning and communicate effectively. They can also keep track of artists and artwork they discover for later reference.
