Our goal is to educate students how to be healthy now, so they can continue to be healthy later in life. Our Garden Club is hosting 45 students in grades 3-5 this school year. We had over 100 kids apply for this club, but unfortunately, we do not have enough supplies and materials to accommodate this many students. We currently have 4 garden beds and would like to include herbs and herb planters in our garden area. We know nutrition is important and we want our kids to be able to learn how to cultivate, grow plants, and discover why eating healthy is important to our bodies. Classrooms use the garden as well to teach necessary science/health benchmarks. This allows our entire school to have a hands-on experience while covering many benchmarks in grades K-5. Our garden area is such an important part of learning for all, here at Timbercrest and we would love to expand, to accommodate all of our students needs. We want to be able to share our Garden Club experience with all grade levels and not just 3-5.

What will be done with my students

We want to expand our garden throughout the school year to increase our Garden Club size, as well as, accommodate the entire school. These garden beds assist all students in learning benchmark standards by being able to actively have a hands-on experience. For most students, they learn more by doing than just completing paper/pencil tasks. This is our 6th year hosting Garden Club and our plans are to keep expanding as it is becoming an asset to our kids learning and exploring science in an exciting way.

The benchmarks included for numerous learning activities throughout our campus are:
SC.3.L.14.2- Investigate and describe how plants respond to stimuli (heat, light, gravity), such as the way plant stems grow toward light
SC.4.L.16.4- Compare and contrast the major stages in the life cycles of Florida plants and animals, such as those that undergo incomplete and complete
SC.1.L.14.2- Identify the major parts of plants, including stem, roots, leaves, and flowers.
SC.3.L.17.1- Describe how animals and plants respond to changing seasons.
SC.3.L.17.2- Recognize that plants use energy from the Sun, air, and water to make their own food.
SC.4.L.17.4- Recognize ways plants and animals, including humans, can impact the environment.
SC.1.L.17.1- Through observation, recognize that all plants and animals, including humans, need the basic necessities of air, water, food, and sunlight.
SC.2.E.6.2- Describe how small pieces of rock and dead plant and animal parts can be the basis of soil and explain the process by which soil is formed.
SC.2.L.14- Organization and Development of Living Organisms
SC.2.L.16.1- Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies.
SC.3.L.14.1- Describe structures in plants and their roles in food production, support, water and nutrient transport, and reproduction.
SC.K.L.14.3- Observe plants and animals, describe how they are alike and how they are different in the way they look and in the things they do.

Benefits to my students

Students in Garden Club and on our campus can use their hands-on experiences in science and/or health benchmarks. They can use these experiences for learning about plant growth, parts of plants, nutrition, and why it is important to grow food. These experiences can be used across multiple curriculum areas, such as: writing, journaling, diagrams, mapping, history, interactive notebooks, etc. Science can be spread across multiple benchmarks and our gardens can do just that, for all students. Engaging students with interactive lessons means they are learning and helps them to remember what they have learned.

Budget Narrative

The items purchased will allow us to put in more garden area: pots, fruits, vegetables, and herbs to accommodate more hands-on activities for our entire school. All materials will help in growing not only the plants, but students' knowledge of plant growth and nutrition with real life experiences.
The cost for all items requested have been found at their lowest price points on either Walmart, Amazon, or Lowes. We laminate, create folders with sleeves to ensure the longevity of created materials.
