The goal of this project is to encourage a love of reading. Students will also dive deeper into comprehending the stories through higher order thinking questions based on what they read. They will then be able to participate in a district wide competition that will elevate their ability to think on their feet and use their knowledge to answer questions in a high paced competitive environment.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 7

With the fulfillment of this grant, I was able to purchase multiple copies of this year’s Sunshine State Books for my Battle of the Books club.

Even though the club is small at only 7 members, the effect of the books is far reaching. The students in the 5th grade classes have become excited about reading (specifically these books too) and taking Accelerated Reader tests. I also have a couple of students who are not the ‘highest’ in the club and it has motivated them to read to be able to compete.

But with the fulfillment of this grant, it became a BOGO deal! Once the Battle of the Books club is done with the books in April, all copies of the books will be donated to the library for ALL students in the school to enjoy! We will be able to triple the number of copies of each Sunshine State Reader in the media center giving all 215 students access to quality literature.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to encourage a love of reading. Students will also dive deeper into comprehending the stories through higher order thinking questions based on what they read. They will then be able to participate in a district wide competition that will elevate their ability to think on their feet and use their knowledge to answer questions in a high paced competitive environment.

What will be done with my students

The students who opt to be in this club from grades four and five will study and read Sunshine State Books from the 2023-2024 school year. Our media center currently does not have any copies of the Sunshine State Books and this will allow students to read them without purchasing them. Students will collaborate within the club to read each Sunshine State Book. During and after reading each book, students will be answering questions based on what they read. They will quiz each other to mimic the competition setting. Students will engage in elaborate conversations to deepen their knowledge and understanding of each book. This will be our first year hosting this club at our school and the hope is to continue every year to come!
Timeline:
My goal is to have books purchased by: October 2023
Students will start reading by: November 2023
The district wide competition will be: April 2024
All books will be donated to our media center as soon as the competition wraps up.

Benefits to my students

In the beginning, students in 4th and 5th grade will be able to join the club and have access to the sunshine state books. After the competition is over, these books will be donated to our Coronado Beach Elementary School media center for all students, teachers and staff to have access to for years to come.

Budget Narrative

All books will be purchased on Amazon through the school's business account to prevent the addition of tax to the orders. Purchasing from Amazon will ensure quick delivery as well as funds back to school through Amazon Smile/Givebacks.
Having 5 copies of each book will ensure that we have enough copies for multiple students to read the same book at a time resulting in small groups within our club that are able to dive deeper into each book and share what they have learned with the club.
