Goal

Most people do not thing about where their food comes from or how easy it is to be able to grow their own. The goal of this project is to teach students the journey their food takes from seed to their plates.

What will be done with my students

This project will begin by starting our seeds in trays on a grow shelf, before transplanting to the garden. As a class, we will plant each seed, label the trays, water, and place under lights. The students will learn that the seeds in the package needed soil, water, and light to be able to grow into seedling. This is covers standard, SC.1.L.17.1 Through observation, recognize that all plants and animals, including humans, need the basic necessities of air, water, food, and space. As the seedlings grow, we will observe and record changes to the plants and any needs that may need to be met, such as water, nutrients, or (organic) pest control. SC.1.L.14.1 Make observations of living things and their environment using the five senses. This project will begin by starting our seeds for the garden. The students will learn that the flowers will become the fruit of the plant and will learn when the proper time is to harvest. SC.1.L.14.2 Identify the major parts of plants, including stem, roots, leaves, and flowers.
After harvesting, as a class we will learn that produce can be eaten fresh from the garden or processed so that it can be stored for a later time. We will work together to wash and prepare the produce for canning. Then the students will observe and record the steps taken to process the food.
I received a garden mini-grant from Stetson to get the garden started. A teacher from Freedom and I plan on collaborating through the process and sharing our progress with each other’s classes.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit my students and my 4H members by allowing them to get outside and learn about gardening, plants, and food production. It could potentially lead them to programs like FFA or 4H, where there are countless opportunities for college scholarships and grants.

Budget Narrative

I will be purchasing a garden sprayer and peppermint liquid soap. This will be used for pest control on the plants. To water the plants, I will buy a water hose and a spray nozzle. For the food processing, I will buy a portable single burner, canning jars, salt, vinegar, and a canning kit.
