Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

I want to thank our donors for their generosity. The Chemistry Department at Mainland High School had several microscopes which needed to be replaced. Thanks to our donors we could purchase five microscopes and one maintenance set.

Microscopes have an important place in a chemistry class. For example, the microscope can provide students to study the crystalline structure of an ionic compound, such as table salt. These lab experiments are very valuable for our students.

With the addition of the five new microscopes two teachers can now provide valuable lab experiments to their students, and around 300 students can work with the new microscopes.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I want to purchase four (4) Flinn Compact Microscopes.

What will be done with my students

SC.912.P.8.7 (Level 2)
Interpret formula representations of molecules and compounds in
terms of composition and structure
SC.912.N.4.1
Explain how scientific knowledge and reasoning provide an
empirically-based perspective to inform society's decision making.
SC.912.P.8.1 (Level 2)
Differentiate among the four states of matter.

Benefits to my students

Student will be able to perform several chemistry labs using a microscope. For example, students can study the shape and size of salt crystals using the magnifications under a microscope. That will enable them to understand the properties, and to compare and contrast among the different types of salt crystals. Four microscopes will be used by the Chemistry Department for 330 students.

Budget Narrative

Included in the order are a maintenance kit and slides for the specimen.
