Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

We had great learning and fun during our time in stem this year. We started it off by making our rubberband pencil catapults. The students had a great time collaborating with each other, and the target game at the end was fun by all. Kinectic and potential energy were completely understood by all after this activity. After we created Elephant toothpaste and Volcano lava - this helped the students completely understand chemical reactions and ways to spot them. After that we had a straw rocket activity that taught energy, position, and speed. Furthermore we created a sunflower garden that was in addition to our other activities. I think the activity that the kids like best was chemical reaction bottle boats and racing. We still have pizzabox microwaves and STEM video production to start and finish by the end of May. It was such a great time all year that we will definately do again next year! I can't wait to see the kids Science scores on the FSA.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to start an after-school STEM club to target low performing science standards.

What will be done with my students

Students will stay after school once a week for an hour to take part in STEM challenges that are focused on fair game science standards. These challenges will encourage students to work in teams to complete tasks by building and creating.
Standards:SC.3.N.1.1: Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them individually and in teams through free exploration and systematic investigations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations.
SC.4.N.1.1: Raise questions about the natural world, use appropriate reference materials that support understanding to obtain information (identifying the source), conduct both individual and team investigations through free exploration and systematic investigations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations.
SC.5.N.1.1: Define a problem, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations of various types such as systematic observation; experiments requiring the identification of variables, collecting and organizing data; interpreting data in charts, tables and graphics; analyze information; make predictions; and defend conclusions.
Chemical reaction bottle boat race:
SC.4.P.9.1: Identify some familiar changes in materials that result in other materials with different characteristics, such as decaying animal or plant matter, burning, rusting, and cooking.
SC.5.P.9.1: Investigate and describe that many physical and chemical changes are affected by temperature.
Miniature catapults:
SC.3.P.10.2: Recognize that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.
SC.4.P.10.2: Investigate and describe that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.
SC.5.P.10.2: Investigate and explain that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.
Pizza Box Cookers:
SC.3.E.6.1: Demonstrate that radiant energy from the Sun can heat objects and when the Sun is not present, heat may be lost.
SC.4.P.10.1: Observe and describe some basic forms of energy, including light, heat, sound, electrical, and the energy of motion.
Straw Rockets:
SC.5.P.13.1: Identify familiar forces that cause objects to move, such as pushes or pulls, including gravity acting on falling objects.
SC.5.P.13.2: Investigate and describe that the greater the force applied to it, the greater the change in motion of a given object.
SC.4.P.10.2: Investigate and describe that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.
SC.5.P.10.2: Investigate and explain that energy has the ability to cause motion or create change.

Benefits to my students

Hopefully master more Science standards than they already know. Mastery of these standards will help students achieve greater success in Science, become better TEAM members, and learn to work collaboratively in a safe positive environment. Standards addressed in STEM club are : SC.3.N.1.1: Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them individually and in teams through free exploration and systematic investigations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations.
SC.4.N.1.1: Raise questions about the natural world, use appropriate reference materials that support understanding to obtain information (identifying the source), conduct both individual and team investigations through free exploration and systematic investigations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations.
