The goal of this project is to ignite a passion for career exploration and planning that connects student's interests to career paths. Not only will students be inspired to explore their interests and careers related to their interests, students will also be given opportunities to practice their digital skills. Digitial skills that students will practice include document formatting, organizing data, writing strategies, effective communication, e-mail features, identifying relevant data, internet search strategies, project management, spreadsheet organization, digital collaboration, video conferencing, resume writing, using a document template and internet safety. Students will also be given tasks that allow them to work on social emotional skills necessary for the workforce such as self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, relationship skills and self-management skills. As students interact with the text, resources and complete project-based learning activities they will be prepared to enter the “ever-changing global workforce” and become “productive citizens”.

The following BEST ELA benchmarks will be utilized as a foundation for career exploration, digital skills lessons, discussion and project-based learning activities:

ELA.10.C.1.5 Improve writing by considering feedback from adults, peers, and/or online editing tools, revising to address the needs of a specific audience.

ELA.10.C.2.1Present information orally, with a logical organization and coherent focus, with credible evidence, creating a clear perspective.

ELA.10. C.4.1 Conduct research to answer a question, refining the scope of the question to align with findings and synthesizing information from multiple reliable and valid sources.

ELA.10.C.5.1 Create digital presentations to improve understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence.

ELA.10.C.5.2 Use online collaborative platforms to create and export publication-ready quality writing tailored to a specific audience, integrating multimedia elements.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

Students were able to:

- Build community through reading a text together in literature circles

- Practice listening and speaking skills in literature circles

- Build reading staminia and fluecny skills by reading aloud

- Utilized career journals to record quotes that stood out to them, challenges and advice given from video clips of people they met throughout the book, strategies to overcome obstacles such as shredding the noise, interests, core value statements and truths, identfiy careers that were interesting to them based on their interest and core value statements and truths, overall thoughts. 

-Practice interview skills and question writing, given opportunites to speak to community memebers, family, guradians and friends about their career paths to make connections and build relationships with people in the workforce today 

-Identify skills, education/training, career outlooks, salaries, jobs available, potential careers

- Some students went on college and trade school tours in our local community

- Some students filled out applications or are in the process of filling out applications for futher education/training

-Some students reached out to others to learn more about their educational/training backgrounds 

-Some students are still researching and identifiyng potential paths for their future.

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students will read through the text and learn from stories, role models, mentors, career education lessons, digital skills lessons and social emotional learning lessons how to find a career that best suits them and their personal interests. This curriculum was developed to increase equity for students and their differing needs related to career exploration and planning. Some students will be impacted by the stories they hear from those in a field of interest to them used within the text. Other students will be able to utilize the tools and strategies taught to help them identify mentors, complete interviews and develop business plans through project-based learning lessons. Students will also be taught how to handle roadblocks and setbacks on their career journeys which will increase their ability to be resilient. Students will take time to reflect on lessons by answering questions and journaling in their career journals. Students will use highlighters and post-it notes to interact with the text and increase comprehension.

Benefits to my students

Career exploration and planning is motivating to students and helps build excitement for students as they prepare for the future. Career exploration and planning provides students with skills needed to develop and maintain hope for what is to come. Students will be given opportunities to explore all that they could possibly be and become. Students will build their confidence in themselves, their social emotional skills, and digital tool skills through career exploration and planning. Students will learn strategies to develop resilience for the roadblocks and setbacks on their career journeys. Students will be able to identify academic steps, training and skills needed prior to pursuing a career and entering the workforce.  

 

Budget Narrative

The budget includes 60 copies of the book Roadmap: The Get-It-Together Guide for Figuring Out What to Do with Your Life Books (two classroom sets), career notebooks for each student and highlighters/ post its for students to track thinking and increase comprehension when reading.
