Part of our curriculum is to teach social emotional learning skills to our students.
Reflective tasks with students about having a growth mindset or a fixed mindset are one way to get them thinking about the way they look at challenges and how their mindset can impact their ability to persist through them. This hands-on approach to learning social skills is very engaging and it will be a memorable activity for these students. When it is fun...they will remember.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 22

Our students had a wonderful time learning social emotional skills through our FUTURES Grant. They loved playing the game "I Like Me 123", and matching up the cards and acting out what the prompts told them to do. We laughed and built a stronger rapport amongst our students. We also played "Totem", which is a personal development tool that allows the students to have fun while discovering their strengths as seen through the eyes of others. It made them so happy to share positive thoughts and watch their classmates try to guess who said what about them. There were many smiles for all the positivity that was shared. Additionally, we created our classroom handprint wreath, connecting us all together, and added our small wooden hearts to know that we are all one in this class together.

We used the remaining art supplies to create masterpieces that encouraged the students to learn how to manage their emotions, build their self-esteem, and learn to show empathy towards others. Our students have been struggling with getting along at times and these activities made them see themselves through other’s viewpoints and reinforce self-regulation, control, and self-awareness. We worked on developing strong positive relationships by building bird houses to represent a safe haven in our class and they drew their self-portraits as they envisioned how others might see them. We created pictue frames to display their self portraits and remind them that we believe in them. It has helped build and maintain positive relationships. This endeavor has helped our students learn to make positive decisions and build on their individual self confidence.

Thank you FUTURES for making this a wonderful experience and opportunity for our students!!!

Happy creating, crafting, discovering, and mastering your individual strengths!!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Part of our curriculum is to teach social emotional learning skills to our students.
Reflective tasks with students about having a growth mindset or a fixed mindset are one way to get them thinking about the way they look at challenges and how their mindset can impact their ability to persist through them. This hands-on approach to learning social skills is very engaging and it will be a memorable activity for these students. When it is fun...they will remember.

What will be done with my students

SP.PK12.US.21.5 Use behaviors and skills, such as self-monitoring, accepting feedback, adjusting own actions, and self-reflection.
SP.PK12.US.20.3 Identify and maintain behaviors that build positive relationships with peers and adults, including friendships.
SP.PK12.US.20.2 Respond in a socially appropriate manner to the emotions and feelings of others.
SP.PK12.US.19.7b Demonstrate self-esteem, self-confidence, and pride, such as through self-affirmations, persistence, and self-monitoring.
SP.PK12.US.20.1 Identify a range of emotions and feelings of others.

Students will work through their emotions and learn social emotional skills by creating artwork and crafts that identify them as an individual.

Benefits to my students

We will use the art supplies to create artwork and to learn to manage their emotions, set goals, feel and show empathy towards others. This will strengthen the development of self-awareness, self-control, self-regulation, social skills, and responsible decision-making, all of which are essential for school and life successes. We will explore the five main competencies of social emotional learning listed above. From the VCS website - "Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions." We will also utilize social games to bring us together as a class and build individual confidence.

Budget Narrative

Students will draw their self-portrait 3 times over the course of the year to see their growth and how they perceive themselves. They will color wooden hearts to represent healing hearts for those who have emotional baggage. We will also create birdhouses and bird feeders for them to know that they have a "Safe Haven" at school. Students will also design and decorate picture frames to display their pictures and know that we "Believe in Them". SEL games will be utilized to increase student engagement, improve social skills and empathy, enhance problem-solving and decision-making abilities, and the opportunity for students to learn and practice social-emotional skills in a safe and interactive environment.
