Original Grant Overview
Goal
Part of our curriculum is to teach social emotional learning skills to our students.
Reflective tasks with students about having a growth mindset or a fixed mindset are one way to get them thinking about the way they look at challenges and how their mindset can impact their ability to persist through them. This hands-on approach to learning social skills is very engaging and it will be a memorable activity for these students. When it is fun...they will remember.
What will be done with my students
SP.PK12.US.21.5 Use behaviors and skills, such as self-monitoring, accepting feedback, adjusting own actions, and self-reflection.
SP.PK12.US.20.3 Identify and maintain behaviors that build positive relationships with peers and adults, including friendships.
SP.PK12.US.20.2 Respond in a socially appropriate manner to the emotions and feelings of others.
SP.PK12.US.19.7b Demonstrate self-esteem, self-confidence, and pride, such as through self-affirmations, persistence, and self-monitoring.
SP.PK12.US.20.1 Identify a range of emotions and feelings of others.
Students will work through their emotions and learn social emotional skills by creating artwork and crafts that identify them as an individual.
Benefits to my students
We will use the art supplies to create artwork and to learn to manage their emotions, set goals, feel and show empathy towards others. This will strengthen the development of self-awareness, self-control, self-regulation, social skills, and responsible decision-making, all of which are essential for school and life successes. We will explore the five main competencies of social emotional learning listed above. From the VCS website - "Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions." We will also utilize social games to bring us together as a class and build individual confidence.
Budget Narrative
Students will draw their self-portrait 3 times over the course of the year to see their growth and how they perceive themselves. They will color wooden hearts to represent healing hearts for those who have emotional baggage. We will also create birdhouses and bird feeders for them to know that they have a "Safe Haven" at school. Students will also design and decorate picture frames to display their pictures and know that we "Believe in Them". SEL games will be utilized to increase student engagement, improve social skills and empathy, enhance problem-solving and decision-making abilities, and the opportunity for students to learn and practice social-emotional skills in a safe and interactive environment.
