Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 600

Thank you so much for funding this grant. This grant allowed us to expose students to new stations in P.E. The hopscotch station provided students with many benefits such as movement patterns, balance & strength, body control, hand and eye coordination, gross motor skills, number recognition & counting, and social – taking turns. We used the mats inside the gym and outside as well. This station was popular and well used.

The track and field station was another favorite amongst kids. The cones were used to mark off the 440-relay event. Groups of students competed in running a 440 and passing the baton off to their teammate. The digital times were a big hit. Students were able to record their time in the 50-yard dash, shuttle run races, and heart run. Students were extremely motivated to improve their time. Students benefited with improved cardio, agility, and coordination.

The soft like frisbees helped students improve their hand-eye coordination, running, and vertical jumping. Most students did not know the correct way to throw a frisbee. They were taught with the cues point, cross, step, flick. They all enjoyed throwing the frisbees.

The final station was a combination of reading books focusing on responsible values and behaviors with the emphasis on handling conflicts with peers and developing good sportsmanship skills. One series the kids loved is called What Should Danny Do? Students became active participants in this series when they chose between two actions that Danny could take. For example, should Danny play basketball even though he is not good at it or give up. There is an ending for each scenario and a lesson the kids are exposed too. This led to discussions and helped kids see that they to have the power to choose. Another book we read was The World Needs More Purple People. After reading this book, the kids made posters on how to become a “purple person”.  Thank you again for funding this grant.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to get kids active during physical education class while meeting our fitness components and physical education standards. The physical fitness components addressed in this grant include cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. The standards focused on include movement competency (locomotor skills), lifetime fitness, and responsible behaviors. Students will also improve their physical ability and develop teamwork skills while working with their peers.

What will be done with my students

Students will be guided in stations and will develop various skills improving their muscular strength and endurance while focusing on movement competency, lifetime fitness, and responsible behavior standards. Before participating in each station, students will learn about cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance via posters, class discussions (Youtube Brain Bites Clips), and/or PowerPoint slides. Each station will have a poster identifying the standard and fitness component for each activity. Students will also work cooperatively with peers during stations exhibiting personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
1. Hopscotch Station will provide students with the following fitness components: increase cardio, strengthen core and lower body muscles and improve balance.
2. Track & Field Station will strengthen cardio while improving agility and coordination. This will also help our 4th and 5th grade students prepare for the Volusia County Fitness Festival in March.
3. Frisbee Station will improve hand-eye coordination, concentration, physical coordination of motor skills such as flexibility, balance, and agility to play.
4. Responsible Behaviors and Values Station – Learn strategies for handling conflicts with peers and develop good sportsmanship skills. Students will make posters showing how they will handle conflicts with peers.
PE.K-2.M.1.1 –Students will demonstrate locomotor and non-locomotor skills with proficiency in a variety of activity settings.
PE.3-5.M.1.1 – Students will apply locomotor and non-locomotor skills in a variety of settings while applying the appropriate movement concept as the situation demands.
PE.3-5.M.1.12 – Students will demonstrate competency in many and proficiency in a few movement forms from a variety of categories (locomotor, non-locomotor, manipulative and non-manipulative.
PE.K-5.L.4.1 – Students will Identify the location of muscles that help the body perform specific physical activities.
PE. K-5.M.1.2-1.5 Students will know how to throw objects with body parts such as using hands to throw a frisbee.
PE.K-5.L.3.1 – Students will participate in regular physical activity and be able to identify activities that provide moderate exercise.
PE.K-5.R. 6.1 Students will identify physical activities that are enjoyable and value physical activities for health, enjoyment, challenge, and/or social interaction.
PE.3-5.L.4.1. Students will describe how muscular strength and endurance enhances performance in physical activities.

Benefits to my students

Benefits to our students include having physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skill, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Students will be able to describe the difference between cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Cardiorespiratory endurance is the ability of the heart and lungs to deliver oxygen to working muscles during continuous physical activity. Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance. Muscular endurance is the ability to use voluntary muscles repeatedly without tiring. Also, students will learn the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities and their contributions to a healthy lifestyle. Physical fitness is more important now than ever before due to our diet and sedentary lifestyle. Getting our students active will benefit them in years to come.

Budget Narrative

The items requested will allow students to participate in the various stations.
