Goal

My goal is to better outfit my music classroom with equipment that will aid students in learning to play instruments and read and write music. I want to provide students with more tools that will help them develop music literacy.

What will be done with my students

I will continue to teach my 4th and 5th grade students how to play simple chords and melodies on the ukulele. Students will also have opportunities to compose their own songs and improvise using the ukuleles. This year, I have some very large classes, some with over 30 students. I currently have 25 ukuleles available for students use, but this is not enough for every student to have their own ukulele.

In addition, I have noticed over the last few years that having music stands would be very helpful for my 3rd-5th grade students when reading music. Having portable music stands will make reading and playing music easier for students while providing flexibility for arrangement of musicians, both in the classroom and when they are performing. These stands will have multiple uses in my classroom, as they can be utilized with recorders, ukuleles, keyboards, and xylophones.

Standards Addressed:

I can play melodies and ostinati, using proper instrumental technique, on pitched and unpitched instruments. MU.3.S.3.2
I can notate simple rhythmic and melodic patterns using traditional notation. MU.3.S.3.5
I can play rounds, canons, or layered ostinati on classroom instruments. MU.4.S.3.2
I can perform extended pentatonic melodies at sight. MU.4.S.3.3
I can perform simple ostinati, by ear, using classroom instruments. MU.4.S.3.4
I can notate simple rhythmic phrases and extended pentatonic melodies using traditional notation. MU.4.S.3.5
I can create variations for selected melodies. MU.4.O.2.1
I can improvise phrases using familiar songs. MU.4.S.1.1
I can compose short vocal or instrumental pieces using a variety of sound sources MU.5.S.1.2
I can play melodies and accompaniments, using proper instrumental technique, on pitched and unpitched instruments. MU.5.S.3.2
I can perform simple diatonic melodies at sight. MU.5.S.3.3
I can notate rhythmic phrases and simple diatonic melodies using traditional notation. MU.5.S.3.5

Benefits to my students

• Students in all classes will be ensured of having their own ukulele to play in class without having to share with another student or wait for a turn. This maximizes the amount of direct, hands-on experience they have with the instrument.
• Students will benefit from having music stands to hold the music they are reading and writing. Music stands make sheet music more accessible and allow students to maintain proper posture while reading music, as opposed to putting it on the floor.
• Portable music stands are lightweight and easy to move, allowing for flexibility in creating practice spaces in the music room.
• Music stands have a wide variety of uses for instruction of many different types of instruments, including recorders, ukuleles, keyboards, and xylophones.

Budget Narrative

The budget adds 8 ukuleles to my current inventory of classroom ukuleles. This allows me to accommodate my largest classes (currently 33), ensuring that every student will have their own ukulele to use in music class. The budget also includes 12 foldable music stands for students to use when reading sheet music and composing music. These stands will have multiple uses in my classroom, as they can be utilized with recorders, ukuleles, keyboards, and xylophones.
