Students were able to use the equipment to collect data to complete their internal assessments for IB Biology. Due to more equipment this year I was able to facilitate more students collecting primary data as compared to years prior.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to purchase some of the tools that students need to to investigate different physiology research topics such as heart rate, body fat percentage, blood oxygen levels, respiration rates and blood pressure.

What will be done with my students

Part of the IB curriculum requires students to develop a research project. Students are required to develop a research question, develop a procedure, collect data, and analyze the data they collected to draw a conclusion. The tools I am requesting will allow students some diversity in their research topic.

These are IB standards.
Heart rate/blood pressure:
• U6.2.11: The heart rate can be increased or decreased by impulses brought to the heart through two nerves from the medulla of the brain.
• U6.2.12: Epinephrine increases the heart rate to prepare for vigorous physical activity.
Respiration Rate:
• S6.4.1: Monitoring of ventilation in humans at rest and after mild and vigorous exercise.
Fat calipers:
• S.2.3.2: Determination of body mass index by calculation or use of nomogram.

Students will have the materials necessary to develop and investigate research.

-PeakAir Peak Flow Meter will be used to measure Changes in Your Lung Air Flow
-Digital Timers to measure rate
-Pulse Oximeter Fingertip to measure heart rate and blood oxygen levels
-Blood pressure cuff to measure blood pressure
