Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

The students were able to use the burners to complete labs that involved chemical changes and process. The Chemistry classrooms were also able to use the mixers and burners for experiments in their classrooms as well. We were able to share the hotplates with out environmental classrooms too for some introductory biology labs that are planned for the end of the school year.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

One of the best ways for students to learn and engage with science is by doing science. The Goal of this project is to provide teachers with the supplies needed to participate in Biological Experiments to deepen their understanding of the Benchmarks

What will be done with my students

One of the standards that students have to master is: SC.912.L.18.12 Discuss the special properties of water that contribute to Earths’ suitability as an environment for life:
cohesive behavior, ability to moderate temperature, expansion upon freezing, and versatility as a solvent. (Level 2). One of the best ways for students to see how Water acts as a universal solvent and the specific heat of it as well as other solvents they would complete an experiment measuring the heats of unknown liquids and then match them to what they know about the specific heats of solvents. This will be used in the classroom and part of a review game at the end of the year prepping students for their Biology EOC

Benefits to my students

The benefit is that students will receive hands on practice completing a lab that is used in different fields of study in the real world including Forensics, environmental science and biochemistry
