Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

This grant impacted general education students and students in our exceptional student education programs (ESE). Students in the ESE programs were able to participate in music and art using switch activated equipment. Prior to this grant students were limited to what they could participate in secondary to physical limitations. This grant also helped to improve inclusion in the special area classes. General education students were asking about how switch operated drums worked and independently coming up to ESE students to watch how the students participated. A team of special area teachers, paraprofessionals, and SLPs were able to educate general education students on how our ESE students can participate in special area just like them, but in their own way. Special area teachers stated how general education students were including ESE students for the first time through use of switch activated music and art equipment.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To adapt learning through switch accessible music, PE/gross motor, and art activities to increase students with disabilities ability to participate in activities throughout their school day at the same level as their typically developing peers.

What will be done with my students

Students with limited mobility and students working on understanding cause and effect will utilize switch access equipment such as a paint spinner, instrument kit, pitching machine to participate in music/art/craft/PE activities with their typically developing peers. Switch access helps students understand the importance of cause and effect working towards understanding the power of cause and effect in language and the power of language. The use of switch access allows all students, no matter their ability level, the opportunity to participate in the leisure activities/special area activities at the same level as their typically developing peers.

Students will works toward the standards of:
SP.Pk12.US.7.1 Use technology and assistive devices as needed to communicate or enhance messages in a meaningful and functional manner

SP.Pk12.US.22.1 Use appropriate social and interpersonal skills and strategies to interact with peers and adults for various purposes across settings.

Benefits to my students

Switch access helps students who are not able to access fine motor and gross motor activities at the same level as their typically developing peers still have the opportunity to participate in all the same activities as their typically developing peers. Giving all students the access to art, music, and PE activities helps to grow language and gives all students the ability to participate in the same activities throughout the day. Switch access helps to encourage inclusion for all students.

Budget Narrative

For this project equipment such as a swirl art spinners, pitching machine, air brush marker, drums, shop vac fan to use air to move balls/scarves and doodler will need to be purchased. Funding will be used for batteries to operate switch equipment. The school has multiple different switches (difference sizes and colors) that can be utilized and will not need to be purchased. At our school we have an ablenet communication environmental control equipment the allows for equipment to be plugged in and utilized with a switch that will not need to be purchased.
