Goal

Rock the Plate is a school/community cookbook project for which scholars will share their favorite recipes. They will also write an essay on the person they would most like to share the meal with. The shared recipe may be a family member, friend, or any positive influential figure (past for present).

What will be done with my students

First, the scholars will submit a favorite recipe with clear instructions on how to prepare the recipe and a detailed description of the recipe. They will use artistic skills to design their own page for the cookbook (each student will have their own page to design appropriately). They will work together to design the cover (ELA.6.C.5.; creating and collaborating). Finally, they will write an essay that explains who they would most like to share the meal with at a table (ELA.6.C.1.; communication through writing). The person can be a family member, friend, mentor, teacher, or a famous person of positive influence on the student. The person may be alive or someone that has passed. These special essays will be part of the book. They will research this person, noting the reason(s) for the positive influence and any accomplishments of the person (ELA.6.C.4; research). The project will require organization, dedication and collaboration (SP.PK12.us.2.1B; task management - identify needed resources and planning steps to completion).

Benefits to my students

Rock the Plate will give students the opportunity to not only share something this is special to them, but to express themselves in many ways (artistically, in writing and through collaboration). The students will enjoy the books and sharing the recipes (as well as the personal essays). This will not only be a positive experience, but will enhance their skills across numerous grade level standards. The cookbook will also foster positivity across cultures as some of the recipes may be from other parts of the world.
