Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 800

K-1st learned about different kinds of fossils and received a hands-on demonstration of various fossil specimens including Megalodon teeth, fossilized trilobites, fossilized ammonites, Orthoceras Fossil Cephalopods and their favorite Coprolite (fossilized feces) They each mixed their salt dough and made impressions with plastic dinosaurs and fern leaves. After painting and drying they each received a magnifying glass to do closer examinations of their unique fossil creation. They learned about Anthropologists and Paleo artist Charles R. Knight.

2nd - 3rd learned about the 8 planets in our solar system and memorized the order of the planets through a mnemonic device. (My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Nachos) They learned about Space Artist David Hardy and how many Space Artists art also scientists well educated in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Astrology. Each student created a multi-layer piece of artwork to illustrate what they think space and our solar system look like. I will be entering Two students’ artwork into the Lieutenant Governor's third annual Florida Space Art Contest for K-5th grade titled "Suit Up! Florida’s Space Suit of the Future" Twelve winners will receive tickets to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Complex. Two grand prize winners—one from the K-2 group and one from the 3-5 group—will have their artwork launched into space aboard an upcoming SpaceX mission.

4th – 5th learned about Geodes and how they are formed in the earth. They also received a hands-on demonstration of various rock and gemstone specimens. Students were able to witness a live demonstration of cracking open a small geode. Students also learned about several Scientists who were also gifted Artists. (Ornithologist-John James Audubon, Zoologist- Ernst Haeckel, Scientific Photographer Felice Frankel) Each student created an 8x10 canvas painting of their interpretation of a Geode using fireplace glass and high-flow acrylic paint.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To inspire my students to love the Art of Science and appreciate the beauty of the world we live in. To marvel at the complexity of a simple rock and create a thirst to know more about the similarities of Art and Science.

What will be done with my students

This lesson will progress over an 8-week grading period. All students will experience a hands-on demonstration of a wide variety of rocks, minerals, and fossil specimens. Kindergarten and first grade will learn how to observe rocks, fossils and different living organisms. They will learn to measure and mix salt dough, imprint various dinosaur bones and vegetation and paint to look like a real fossil. Second and third grade will learn about the formation of geodes, how to open a real geode and use it as a reference to create a three-dimensional geode painting. Fourth and fifth grade will create an artist’s interpretation of our galaxy, the Milky Way. They will learn how the beautiful gas, dust, stars and orbiting objects in the Solar System can be portrayed through art. The students will learn about the science behind creating iridescent paper for the base of their solar system artworks. Each student will take home their finished fossil, geode painting or galaxy art piece.

Benefits to my students

I will implement this lesson with all 780 students from K-5th. (41 educators) This lesson will support the Florida Science Curriculum Standards as well as teaching multiple aspects of the Visual Arts Curriculum, Language Arts Curriculum and Math Curriculum.

Science Standards:
SC.K.N.1.5 Recognize that learning can come from careful observation.
SC.1.E.6.1 Recognize that water, rocks, soil, and living organisms are found on Earth's surface.
SC.2.E.6.2 Describe how small pieces of rock and dead plant and animal parts can be the basis of soil and explain the process by which soil is formed.
SC.3.N.3.3 Recognize that all models are approximations of natural phenomena; as such, they do not perfectly account for all observations.
SC.4.E.6.PA.2Recognize common minerals, such as rock salt, talc, gold, and silver.
SC.5.E.5.1 Recognize that a galaxy consists of gas, dust, and many stars, including any objects orbiting the stars. Identify our home galaxy as the Milky Way.
