Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 94

From the students and the instructor at Mainland High School Fire Service Program, we would like to thank you for your support in the grant funds. The program was able to purchase a Low Level Strainer which is used to draft water from a static water source when a fire hydrant is not available. Without the strainer, students would only be able to read about and look at videos of how the strainer works. Because of your support, we were able to get the students hands on training with practical learning scenarios. Students were able to see how low the drop tank could be drained learning how much longer the fire truck could be used. This is also a skill that can be checked off in their State Task Book allowing them one step closer to becoming a certified fire fighter.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant request is to ensure the Mainland High School Fire Service Program students are properly equipped to perform drafting operations utilizing our fire engine and 1,000 gallon portable water tank.

What will be done with my students

Introduction to Fire Fighting
14.0 Discuss the various components of water supply systems and describe alternative water supply sources used for rural water supply.
14.01 Explain the ways water supply system components are used by firefighters.
14.04 Explain alternative water supply sources and methods of access.
14.05 Describe methods used for rural water supply operations.
The purpose of this device is to ensure that the maximum amount of water is extracted from a static water source. In our case, it is the portable water tank used in the fire service when a hydrant is not available. Students will learn how to properly connect drafting hose to the engine and low flow strainer for the purpose of refilling the fire engine water tank.

Benefits to my students

By receiving this item, students will be able to complete the water drafting portion of their State of Florida Firefighter I Task Book. This is required as part of their training in water management and water supply training to become a state certified firefighter.
