Original Grant Overview
Goal
This is my first year as a music teacher at a school that I have worked at for the past 13 years. My goal is to expand the music department at my elementary school and to expand my students' musical abilities. We have been open for the past 28 years and we have not had an opportunity to try ukuleles.
What will be done with my students
My goal is to use the ukuleles with my 5th graders and add another instrument for them since we do not do full band instruments. The students will learn the chords for the ukulele and will be able to sing and play at the same time. Students will sing part of songs in an appropriate range, using proper vocal technique and maintaining pitch (MU.5.S.3.1). Students will also play melodies and accompaniments, using proper instrumental technique , on pitch and unpitched instruments (MU.5.S.3.2).
Benefits to my students
Playing the ukulele requires focus and attention to detail, such as learning to read music, chords, and strumming patterns. This process requires mental concentration and can improve focus and attention skills, which can benefit other areas of life, such as classwork. Playing ukuleles is like exercising every part of your brain. It helps improve your mental performance and memory. There is even evidence that music can help a patient's brain recover from medical conditions.
Budget Narrative
The one tuner will be used to make sure all ukuleles are tuned.
