Through the use of the Science,it is planned to work methods for the improvement the ability to learn how to process of the world around for autistic students. Science is the way that an autistic kid can understand all the sensory inputs around them. Science present an option this population to develop and increase improvement in their daily basics. Some of the topics that we are going to work during this project are the five senses to help them (SC.K.N.1.1): collaborate with a partner to collect information, (SC.K.N.1.2): Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses, and understand how things work around us.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

During the period we worked on this project we learned the value of science and the importantce of electricity. Our students learned to recognize that the world around them is diverse, dynamic and extraordinary. We talked about the differents ways to create energy. Another of our achievements was that our students developed abilities to be more social. Create forms of energy, understand about Scientific Method, and  What is  been a scientific. The imporatance of cultivating ideas about science.

They are more aware about the importance of science and motivated during classroom expectations. We are grateful for helping ignite the spark of science in our studnets with nerodivergent abilities (ASD). My students are more confidente regarding sciences and engage during class.  The speach and language therapist along with the assistant (paraproffesionals) cooperated during each project and lesson taught. When we flew the kites we all became childern again, laughing and understanding the legacy that Benjaming Franklin left to this nation.

During the creation of electricity our students undersood the importance of preserving the planet.  The learnd all the of Benjamin Franklin's inventions and that they are still used in these years. Is been an unique  learning experiences.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Through the use of the Science,it is planned to work methods for the improvement the ability to learn how to process of the world around for autistic students. Science is the way that an autistic kid can understand all the sensory inputs around them. Science present an option this population to develop and increase improvement in their daily basics. Some of the topics that we are going to work during this project are the five senses to help them (SC.K.N.1.1): collaborate with a partner to collect information, (SC.K.N.1.2): Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses, and understand how things work around us.

What will be done with my students

Project Name: Science... Is my Superpower!
Topic: Nature of Science: The Five Senses
# of Standards: (SC.K.L.14.1): (SC.K.N.1.2): # of Weeks:5
Content Standard- Recognize the five senses and related body parts. Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses.
Will students need to KNOW? (Academic Language)
SC.K.N.1.5 and SC.K.N.1.2 –
• Making observations in a science classroom includes the use of all five sense. Collaborate with a partner to collect information to recognize that I use my five senses to:SC.K.N.1.1
Sight, Touch, Hearing, Smell and Taste.
What will students need to UNDERSTAND? (Essential Concepts) (SC.K.N.1.2)Make observations of the natural world and know that they are descriptors collected using the five senses.(SC.K.N.1.4) Observe and create a visual representation of an object which includes its major features, Student will understand the importance of the five senses to interpreter the world around them. Identify the correspond of the senses. Describe the senses and the proper use of each sense (touch, see, smell, hearing, taste).

What will students need to DO (SAY, WRITE, INVESTIGATE, DRAW, MODEL) to show learning? SC.K.N.1.5
Recognize that learning can come from careful observation.
Students will:
• list new things learned after making careful observations and hearing the observations of others.
• identify and describe the roles the senses play in a given situation .
• ask questions and find answers about the world around them using their five senses.
• recognize that observations often lead to more questions.

Student will read story book( Now and Ben) about science inventor: Benjamin Franklin's, classify different activities that we do and how to use our five senses during each activity. Create kites, investigate hydroponics, observe rocks, explore sensory toys to investigate, and explore the importance of our Five Senses. To understand the world around us.
What tasks/learning opportunities will be given to the students to show the learning from above?(SC.K.L.14.1) Recognize the five senses and related body parts.
Engage: Student will be engage reading a book about Benjamin Franklin and his inventions. The title of the book is “Now and Ben”. This book presents the importance of using our senses to create and improve things around or world. Students will learn new things after making careful observations and hearing the observations of others.
• identify and describe the roles the senses play in each situation.
• ask questions and find answers about the world around them using their five senses.
• recognize that observations often lead to more questions.
Explore
(Hands-on)Collaborate with a partner to collect information.Standard (SC.K.L.14.1): Recognize the five senses and related body parts.
Students will:
• explore scientific tools (e.g., ruler, measuring cup, thermometer, microscope, hand lens, dropper, goggles) that scientists use.
• How new inventions can change the world around us an improve our life.
• The importance of work as a team and understand our five senses.
Explain
(text, websites, and student discussion) The book “Now and Ben” will develop curiosity and knowledge of the things that humans can create to improve our lives, and the way that we can understand things around us. During discussion we are going to explore some of the inventions that Benjamin Franklin's develops to help us in the past and in our modern world. For example: the kite for electricity, the stove to help us cook, the refrigerator, the newspaper, the miles matter, etc. How all these inventions help us and the relation with our five senses.
Elaborate
(How will students apply the learning?) Student will have hands in action Some of the experiments that we are going to develop during class would be kites, our own newspaper, comic book, a recycle system, create a space for a hydroponic garden to learn the importance to eat healthy. Understand how electricity work.
Evaluate
(Formal or informal) The way that we are going to evaluate if the students meet the requirements will be tracking the state standards during the lesson.

What Nature of Science standard(s) will be integrated and how will they be integrated into instruction?
Thinking and Acting Like a Scientist: It is essential to create a learning environment with opportunities for students to investigate, ask questions and experiment. Include materials so students can record their observations and discuss their observations with both the teacher and classmates.
What questions will you ask DURING THE LESSON to check for understanding?
Level 1 • share ideas about why the thing they observed happened.
• ask “I wonder how” or “I wonder why” questions.
• talk about their observations using familiar and newly acquired vocabulary.
What collaborative structure(s) could you use to encourage student talk and processing?
Observation: students can gather information using their five senses.
Collecting information: ask questions about the information they have gathered.
Communicating with others: work with others by sharing, listening, and encouraging. With help, show their information in a realistic and organized way.

What materials will you need to gather?
Book: Now and Ben
Kites, STEM science kit, hydroponic system, seeds, fertilizers for hydroponic plants, hydroponics plants.
Sensory toys: sight, touch, hear, smell, taste. National Geographic Rock kit.

Benefits to my students

The benefits this project is bring to our ASD population an effective instruction for teaching; a variety of skills, including content achieving n scientific literacy. The students develop competence, a sense of wonder about the world and understanding of humans roles in the universe around them to make effective interactions. This is an opportunity to apply abstract concepts and develop the pragmatics ideas to make decisions based on problem solving. As well, an understanding of the relationships between science, technology, and how that applies to their lives.

Budget Narrative

The cost of this project is approximately $413.73. The same will be used for the purchase of materials in order to develop the skills required by the science curriculum. These are specifically for the instruction of the standards (SC.K.L.14.1): (SC.K.N.1.2). Which establish knowledge in the areas of the five senses and scientific developments in the grades levels from kindergarten to second grade. With the approval of this project and its budget, we will be able to execute the goal and objectives described below.
