My advanced students began learning tap in January! They have really enjoyed adding a new genre to their dance class, and have loved learning all they can aboyt tap. We have been focusing on the basics this year in the hopes that next year we can start incoporating some choreography, and maybe even perform a tap number for one of our shows! The beginning dance students are even more excited to audition for advanced dance because they know they will get to learn tap along with the other genres. I am so grateful for this opportunity to broaden my students horizons and keep them tapping for years to come!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is for my dance students to have tap shoes so they can begin learning that style of dance.

What will be done with my students

Having tap shoes will help me permanently add tap to my dance students curriculum. They will be able to explore a genre which is very important in the dance world. I plan to implement weekly tap lessons if we should receive the shoes. I also plan to explain the history of tap and how it has impacted other dance genres.
Standards:
DA.68.F.3.3: Prepare auditions and audition skills for schools, companies, and/or commercial work in dance
DA.68.H.2.1: Analyze dance in various cultural and historical periods, and discuss how it has changed over time.
DA.68.H.3.5: Practice using world languages and accurate dance terminology suitable to each dance genre.
DA.68.S.1.1: Explore dance phrases to investigate choreographic principles and structures.

Benefits to my students

Many professional dance companies require at least some tap training. This will prepare them for their future if they choose to continue dancing. They will be exposed to another genre of dance which they may not otherwise learn about. I have 30 students in my advanced dance class who will directly benefit from this request this year, however I have 70+ students in my program who will benefit as they move up to advanced dance. Having a class set will ensure all advanced dance students can learn tap in years to come.
