Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 130

From all of the 5th grade classes at Deltona Lakes elementary, we'd like to say thank you for providing us with the funds to make a lifelong learning activity and memories with our DLE energy cafe! Students had so much fun cooking with the easy bake ovens, experimenting with recipes and making grilled cheese sandwiches, all while learning about heat energy, heat transfer, and chemical changes! We are very appreciative! This activity will hopefully allow students to remember and connect the experiences with the science standards! Thank you for the memorable experience!

Sincerly, Jennifer Diallo

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will learn all about Energy as they complete a cooking lab exploring the different science of energy standards specific to 4th or 5th grade students.

What will be done with my students

The Academic Coach will set up a science lab for hands on exploration. Each activity will focus on the Energy standards for each grade level-ex:4th grade cooking activity stations will all be focused on 4th grade standards and 5th grade cooking activity stations will focus on 5th grade standards.

Station 1: pancake station-students will assist teacher with making pancakes to demonstrate heat causing a change.

Station 2: Students will make grilled cheese sandwiches and explore how the bread and cheese are changed through the process of heat energy

Station 3: Students will mix and make mini cakes in an easy bake oven and discuss the science that's taking place

Station 4: Demonstrating heat transfer with hot water and different utensils-discussion of conduction and insulation.

At the conclusion of the cooking lab, students will continue to collaborate about energy sources and will create a summary poster to present to the class about what they learned from the lab.

The following standards will be covered with the Energy Cafe Science Labs:

Nature of Science standards-
*SC.5.N.1.2: Explain the difference
between an experiment and other types
of scientific investigation.
*SC.5.N.1.5: Recognize and explain that
authentic scientific investigation
frequently does not parallel the steps of
the scientific method
+SC.4.N.1.4: Attempt
reasonable answers to scientific
questions and cite evidence in
support
*SC.4.N.1.6: Keep records that
describe observations made,
carefully distinguishing actual
observations from ideas and
inferences about observations
*SC.5.N.1.6: Recognize and explain the
difference between personal
opinion/interpretation and verified
observation
*SC.4.N.1.7: Recognize and
explain that scientists base their
explanations on evidence
*SC.5.N.2.1: Recognize and explain that
science is grounded in empirical
observations that are testable;
explanation must always be linked with
evidence.
*SC.5.N.2.2: Recognize and explain that
when scientific investigations are carried
out, the evidence produced by those
investigations should be replicable by
others
*SC.4.P.9.1: Identify some familiar
changes in materials that result in
other materials with different
characteristics, such as decaying
animal or plant matter, burning,
rusting, and cooking
*SC.4.P.10.1: Observe and
describe some basic forms of
energy, including light, heat, sound,
electrical, and the energy of motion
*SC.4.P.10.2: Investigate and
describe that energy has the ability
to cause motion or create change.
*SC.5.P.9.1: Investigate and describe
that many physical and chemical changes
are affected by temperature
*SC.5.P.10.1: Investigate and describe
some basic forms of energy, including
light, heat, sound, electrical, chemical, and mechanical.
*SC.5.P.10.2: Investigate and explain that
energy has the ability to cause motion or
create change

Benefits to my students

Students will participate in science lab stations to experience hands on lessons about energy. The real life experiences will allow students to collaborate, manipulate, and investigate different forms of energy and how they relate to cooking. Because cooking is something that happens in real life, we can also tie in math lessons about measurement, nature of science standards with our scientific investigations, and reading by previewing articles about the energy used during the cooking process.

Budget Narrative

All items will be purchased from walmart and amazon to get the cheapest possible discount. The easy bake ovens will be used for multiple projects throughout the year with all different classes and added to our science lab materials for future hear energy activities.
